Eagles fall to Eureka in season opener

EUREKA, Ill. – The Edgewood College men's soccer team fell to Eureka College 3-1 in their season opener. Kevin Joyce scored the Eagles first goal of the 2023 campaign late in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team managed to find the back of the net in the first half. Eureka (1-0) was aggressive early on, taking three of their five shots in the half in the first five minutes. Edgewood College (0-1) was strong on the attack, outshooting the Red Devils 8-5 through the first 45 minutes.

- The first goal of the game came in the 52nd minute, as Santiago Herrera found the back of the net to give Eureka a 1-0 lead.

- The final ten minutes proved to be full of action, as three of the four goals in the contest were scored after the 80-minute mark. Teddy Wesoloski found the back of the net to give the Red Devils a 2-0 advantage.

- Edgewood College finally made one stick, as Kevin Joyce scored his first collegiate goal in the 87th minute. Joyce was assisted by Noah Hook.

- Eureka wasn't satisfied with a 2-1 score. The Red Devils added their third and final goal with just four seconds remaining.

- Edgewood College and Eureka finished even on shots with 14 apiece. Eureka put six shots on target, compared to just four from the Eagles. Hook led the Eagles with five shots. Miguel Konde Gwo and Elliah Tameklo added three shots each.

- Maverick Van Laanen recorded three saves in net for the Eagles.

- Edgewood College will host Lawrence University in the Eagles home opener on Sunday. Action is set for 1:00 p.m. from Edgewood College Field at Reddan Park.
