Eagles douse Inferno in doubleheader sweep

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -  The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad kicked off their final weekend of the regular season Saturday. They played a pair of games against the Alverno Inferno in more Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) action. The Eagles (19-18, 9-12 NACC) swept past the inferno (4-31, 1-22) in 4-0 and 7-5 fashion.

GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4, ALVERNO 0
- The first five innings of the game featured one run. A sacrifice grounder from Alyse Maurer brought in Olivia Hebert for a 1-0 lead.

- Gaby Slater tossed a gem of a game, holding the Inferno scoreless with two hits allowed and five strikeouts in a complete game.

- Edgewood College tacked on insurance runs late. A Gracie Halfman double to left field in the sixth made things 2-0, while Jenna Sanchez scored two with a single to left field in the seventh to settle the final tally.

- Sanchez was white hot in game one. She hit three-of-four with two RBIs and a run.

GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 7, ALVERNO 5
- The Eagles kicked off the scoring with singles in the first and second. Halfman singled to left field while Natalie Fields hit a single to center.

- Hebert continued her strong power hitting season with a two-run shot over the outfield wall. The Inferno made inroads in the fourth with two runs off of singles with the bases loaded as Edgewood College led 4-2

- The Eagles sent in the eventual winning runs in the fifth. A Halfman single tallied one, while Emily Meyer hit a sacrifice grounder to score another. Camden Shepherd wrapped the scoring for the visitors  with a sacrifice fly to right field.

- Alverno chipped down the five-run lead in the last couple of innings. Giselle Moreno hit two home runs, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, while the Inferno added on an RBI single in the fifth.

- Maurer and Fields each hit three-of-three on the day. Sanchez accounted for two runs, while Hebert and Halfman had a pair of RBIs each.

- Tatum Duff earned the victory in the start, while Fields earned a save. Fields allowed one run on one hit in 2.1 innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College is now 29-11 in the all-time series against Alverno and have won four straight.

- Hebert's home run in the second game was her 10th of the season. She is now tied for the single-season record for home runs with Colleen Joyce (2009).

UP NEXT
The Eagles will wrap up their regular season tomorrow with a home doubleheader. They host the Lakeland Muskies for Alumni Day at Ceniti Park starting at noon. The Muskies hold a 41-36 lead in the all-time series, but the Eagles have won four straight.
