VERONA – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad wrapped up their 2023 season Sunday with a doubleheader at Ceniti Park. They battled in a pair of pitcher's duels against the Lakeland Muskies. The Eagles (20-19, 10-13 NACC) won a 1-0 affair off of a
Gracie Halfman walk off single, but fell in a 1-0 result to the Muskies (14-22, 7-17) in game two.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Skylar Hall was the star of the show in both games for Lakeland. She threw for 16.2 innings pitched on the day and held the Eagles to a combined seven hits and one run in two games. She had two complete games with eight strikeouts.
- The main threat from the Muskies in regular innings of game one came in the top of the second. They had runners on the corners with one out, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the threat.
-
Kya Loffswold broke up a no hitter in the bottom of the tenth with a single to left field. Halfman was the hero of game one, hitting a single to left field to send home
Jenna Sanchez from second.
-
Gaby Slater earned the victory in the first game. She tossed a full 10 innings with four strikeouts as and held Lakeland scoreless.
- Hall stepped up once more for game two. She battled with
Tatum Duff as both pitchers held their respective lineups to just five hits and allowed no walks. The Muskies netted the lone run of game two, an early single to center field.
- Hall and Duff both impressed, with the former earning the win and latter the loss. Duff fanned one and limited her mistakes, allowing no free bases from walks, hit by pitch, or wild pitches.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Lakeland holds a 42-37 lead in the all-time series, but the Eagles have won five of six.
- The walk off in game one was not Halfman's first of the season. She also walked off a 4-3 victory over Marian in the first game of a doubleheader on April 23 with a home run.
- The Eagles 25 times hit by pitch as a team set a new mark, previously set last season with 23.
