MEQUON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad entered the second day of the NACC Tournament, Friday. The Eagles (26-17) took down third-seeded MSOE (26-14), eliminating them in an 8-6 11 inning thriller. Edgewood College then found themselves locked in a low-scoring struggle with the Scarlet Hawks (22-21), but a clutch
Dylan Carrington double propelled them to a 3-2 comeback victory late.
GAME ONE: NO 4 EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, NO. 3 MSOE 6 (11 INNINGS)
- Carrington continued his strong play at the plate, doubling in a pair of runs down the left field line to open the scoring in the first. The Raiders answered in the fourth, taking advantage of loaded bases for an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly to tie things at 2-2.
- Mistakes helped fuel a three-run rally in the fifth. A wild pitch sent home
Connor Goodwin, while Carrington singled in
Joseph Kalafut after he got an extra base from the wild pitch.
Daniel Bentivegna hit a grounder to shortstop to score another. A throwing error by the catcher in the bottom of the frame would leave the Eagles up 5-3.
- The two teams traded single runs in the next two innings. A bases loaded single through the left side sent in one in the sixth for MSOE. A fielding error by the right fielder allowed Kalafut to score in the seventh to maintain the two-run edge.
- The Raiders would tie things up in the eighth. A groundout to first tallied one, while a fielding error by first base allowed an unearned run to score safely. The two squads went off to extras after a quiet ninth and went into the 11th after an uneventful 10th. Errors would doom MSOE in the final inning, with a throwing error by third base and a fielding error in right field allowing
Kyle Sagan to touch home for the eventual winning run.
- A
Colby Davis grounder to the shortstop would tack on an unearned insurance run, but
Conner Dunfee and the defense wouldn't need it. While the Raiders would have the tying run up to plate with two outs, a ground out to shortstop let Edgewood College survive and advance.
- Prindle stood out in the lineup, hitting three-of-three with one RBI and one run. Bentivegna and Carrington also posted multi-hit games, with Carrington tallying three RBIs.
- Dunfee earned the victory, pitching four innings of two-hit shutout ball.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3, ILLINOIS TECH 2
- The Eagles managed to load the bases early, but only got one run out of it with a
Dylan Carrington sacrifice fly to center field. The two squads would be uncharacteristically quiet at the plate for most of the game.
- The Scarlet Hawks would inch ahead in the fourth and sixth innings. A solo shot to right field tallied one in the fourth, while a sacrifice fly to center field in the sixth would score another.
- Carrington came through when the Eagles badly needed runs. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth, he took advantage of Illinois Tech mistakes to score two unearned runs off a double to right center to swing the one-run lead into Edgewood College's favor late. Illinois Tech would get a runner on second in the top of the ninth, but a grounder to the shortstop let the Eagles advance.
-
Nick Manthei shined in the elimination game. He tossed a complete game with five strikeouts.
- Carrington hit one-of-three and batted in all three Edgewood College runs in the comeback.
