WAUWATOSA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad hit the road for more Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) affairs Saturday. They faced the Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors at Neuman Family Field. The Eagles (11-7, 4-2 NACC) broke the Warriors (2-15, 1-5) with a 10-run eighth in a 19-1 victory game one, while a four-run rally in the ninth broke a 5-5 tie in game two for a 9-5 victory.
Joseph Kalafut broke the all-time doubles record in the second game in the top of the fifth.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 19, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 1 (8 INNINGS)
- The Eagles, initially, paced themselves on runs. A sacrifice fly from
Kyle Prindle scored one, while a
Cooper Holewinski single to right field wrapped up a 2-0 first inning.
Kyle Sagan singled to center field for the lone run in the second inning.
- A home run derby broke out in the ensuing innings.
Daniel Bentivegna sent a two-run shot to left center in the third. A
Connor Goodwin homer to right field scored two in the fourth, while a Warriors home run in the fourth prevented a shutout. A failed pickoff attempt let
Jacob Carney cross home, while a Goodwin double to left scored another to leave things at 9-1.
- A quiet few innings followed scoring-wise, but Edgewood College put the game away in the eighth. Carney doubled to left to start things off, while a
Carson Richter double to left center tallied another.
Ryan Ambrosy singled to center to continue the rally. Kalafut was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, which was followed up by Prindle being walked and Holewinski being hit by a pitch for more runs.
- Carney ended the scoring with a bang, sending a grand slam over the center field wall. A three-up, three-down bottom of the eighth concluded things in game one.
-
Gavin Vrana threw an absolute gem. He tossed a complete game with only one earned run, no walks, and nine strikeouts.
- Nine Eagles battled in runs. Prindle was a steady presence on the bases, being walked four times in five at-bats.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 9, WISCONSIN LUTHERAN 5
- The Warriors got the jump on the Eagles pitching in the second game. After a Kalafut sacrifice fly to send in an unearned run, three crossed home for Wisconsin Lutheran in the bottom of the first. A single through the left side followed up by a sacrifice fly to right and a single up the middle left Edgewood College down 3-1 after one.
- A
Jackson DeChristina single to left tallied one in the top of the second, but the Warriors erased the gain with a sacrifice fly to center field in the bottom of the inning. The third and fourth innings played out similarly; a wild pitch scored one for the Eagles in the third, but a single to left field left things at 5-3 Warriors after four.
- Edgewood College finally made headway in the sixth. An Ambrosy popup to second base sent in one, while
Brevin Brisack singled in another through right field to tie the game up at 5-5.
- The dam broke in the top of the ninth. A Kalafut single to left field brought in the winning run. Carney continued his strong day with a bases-loaded single to right, while DeChristina tacked on another RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field. A throwing error by the catcher added on the ninth run for Eagles, and a three-up three-down performance by
Leo Stone closed the book on the sweep.
- Edgewood College's bullpen impressed, tossing four innings of one-hit ball.
Conner Dunfee took home the victory.
- Goodwin hit four-of-five in the second game, while Kalafut and DeChristina each had a pair of RBIs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kalafut's double in the top of the fifth broke the Eagles' career mark for doubles. The double was his 49th of his career, breaking the previous mark of 48 set by Travis Krahn from 2001 to 2004.
- Edgewood College now has a 48-30 series lead over the Warriors and have won four in a row.
- The Eagles have held three teams to just one run this season.
