MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's tennis team won five-of-six in singles play to earn an 8-1 non-conference victory over Wartburg College on Thursday. Cecile Fuchs, Maddy Coopmans, Jewel Lindwall, Evelyn Taylor, and Madelyn Connaughty each finished the day undefeated.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (11-5) swept doubles play to take a confident 3-0 lead into singles play. The No. 2 duo of Coopmans and Lindwall battled to an 8-2 victory. Taylor and Connaughty earned an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 slot. Fuchs and Ellie Murphy battled to a tiebreak, but eventually won by a score of 8-7 (7-5).
- Four of the six singles matches were determined by tiebreak. The Eagles on the day won four of 5 tiebreak matches, three of those coming in singles play.
- Fuchs earned a big win a No. 1 singles, defeating Meadow LaDuke by a score of 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6). Next in the win column was Madelyn Connaughty, who earned a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win over Gracie O'Donnell in the No. 6 singles slot.
- Linwall posted a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles, while Taylor earned a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4) victory at No. 3 singles. Lastly, Coopmans earned a clutch 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (11-9) win in the No. 5 slot.
