Eagles bullpen shuts down Blue Jays bats in nonconference victory

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad played their first game of the 2023 at Stampfl Field Thursday afternoon. A sunny and windy day greeted the Elmhurst Blue Jays for a non-conference tilt. The two squads put the other through their paces, but it was the Eagles (9-7) that pulled away with a five-run eighth to take a 9-3 victory over the Blue Jays (8-12).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- While both squads had opportunities early, neither struck gold until the third. Colby Davis took advantage of bases-loaded to send home two with a single to center field. Ryan Ambrosy tacked on a third run in the fourth with a single down the left field line.

- Elmhurst capitalized on errant pitching by Edgewood College in the fifth. A double put them on the board for the first time, though the hitter would be out at third. A bases-loaded balk brought in another, while a grounder to second tied things up at 3-3. It appeared it would stay at 3-3 through five, but a misjudged pop out by the Blue Jays pitcher allowed the eventual winning run to cross home.

- The winning run stepped on home in the fifth, but the Eagles made it a convincing victory in the eighth. An extra base runner off an error turned into five unearned runs. A Kyle Prindle single to left started the rally, while Davis added on another RBI with another single to left. Brooks Kalscheur doubled in a run to left field. Carter Borcherding tacked on the final runs with a two-RBI single to center field.

- A three-up, three-down inning dashed any hopes of a Blue Jays rally. The Edgewood College bullpen was exceptional in the victory, combining for 4.2 innings pitched and no runs allowed. Nate Bacskai earned the victory, while the pitching staff fanned seven from Elmhurst.

- Davis and Borcherding stepped up in big ways. Both brought in three runs and accounted for another, with Davis swinging three-of-five and Borcherding two-of-five. Eight others recorded hits for the Eagles.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College has now won three of their last four.

- The meeting was the first time the Eagles and Blue Jays have met in baseball.

- The game was the first at Stampfl Field for the 2023 season. The doubleheader against Concordia Wisconsin were home games for Edgewood College, but played at Concordia Wisconsin due to field conditions.

UP NEXT
The Eagles return to Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) action Saturday. They travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to battle against Wisconsin Lutheran. Edgewood College holds a 46-30 series lead over the Warriors and have won back-to-back.
