Benedictine pitching, defense stifle Edgewood College bats

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad hosted a key Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader Tuesday. They hosted the Benedictine Eagles at Stampfl Field. Edgewood College (18-12, 10-6 NACC) made little headway into Benedictine's (22-9, 13-3) pitching or defense, falling by 12-3 and 10-1 margins.

GAME ONE: BENEDICTINE 12, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3
- Benedictine put eight runs on the board before Edgewood College recorded a hit. A sacrifice fly in the first was the lone run for either team in the first three innings.

- Benedictine turned on the offense in the middle innings. A single to left field and a double down the left field line put two on the board in the fourth. A solo shot to left center followed by a sacrifice grounder and a double steal left things at 6-0 after five. A pair of wild pitches sent two home in the sixth.

- Edgewood College made some headway with one of the relievers in the seventh. A pair of singles from Kyle Sagan and Connor Goodwin with the bases loaded was followed up by a Joseph Kalafut sacrifice fly left things at 8-3.

- Benedictine took advantage of Edgewood College errors and small ball to put four more insurance runs on the board in the ninth to settle the final tally.

- Garrett Redner threw well in relief, tossing six strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.

- Jackson Bahn tossed a gem, holding Edgewood College to one hit in six innings pitched while fanning eight from Edgewood College.

GAME TWO BENEDICTINE 10, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 1
- Benedictine carried their momentum from game one into game two. A pair of singles into the outfield scored two in the first, while a single through the left side in the second put things at 3-0 Benedictine.

- A single to left field in the fourth was the only run scored between either squad between the second and seventh innings. Benedictine firmly took control of things in the seventh, taking advantage of small ball and errors for four runs. A single to short scored one, while a single into right field added on two more. A throwing error tacked on one more run for the visitors in the seventh.

- A pair of sacrifice flies in the ninth finalized Benedictine's tally. Carson Richter reached home on a wild pitch to prevent the shut out.

- Nick Kosmetatos tossed six innings of one-hit ball, while Benedictine's staff allowed five hits on the day.

- Kyle Prindle was a bright spot in an otherwise quiet lineup. He hit two-of-three and walked once.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kalafut's walk in game two moved him into a tie on the single season walks list. He's tied with former player and current coach Alex Prindle's 33 walks back in 2022.

- Benedictine has won 12 in a row in the series and leads the all-time series 23-10.

- The losses were the first back-to-back losses for Edgewood College in almost two weeks.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College takes a break from NACC action for a non-conference tilt. They travel to face the UW-Whitewater Warhawks with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The Warhawks took a 8-5 victory over the Eagles back on March 16, 2023 and hold a 13-2 lead in the all-time series.
