Errors doom Eagles in extra innings at receiving votes Warhawks

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad hit the road for a big nonconference affair Thursday evening. They battled with the UW-Whitewater Warhawks, receiving votes in the current d3baseball.com poll and ranked 19th in the previous poll. The Eagles (18-13) lagged behind for most of the game, but a crazy six-run ninth forced extras. The Warhawks (19-11) took advantage of an error to seal the deal in a 11-10 11 inning marathon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- It was all UW-Whitewater early. A two-run homer to left field and a single to first kicked things off, while a one-run single to right field in the third, a passed ball in the fourth, and a single to left field in the fifth put things at 6-0 Warhawks.

- Edgewood College made some headway into things in the sixth. Joseph Kalafut broke the scoring drought with a single to right field, while a fielder's choice sent Connor Goodwin home. Another home run, this time to left field, put UW-Whitewater up 7-2 after six.

- The Eagles had momentum in the eighth and ninth. Goodwin led things off with a home run to left center, while an error tacked on another. A throwing error by the shortstop kept the Warhawks ahead 8-4.

- Edgewood College pieced together a six-run ninth when they needed it most. A single to center field from Kalafut sent home two, while a bases-loaded walk from Cooper Holewinski added another. A pair of errors sent in three more runners to give the Eagles a 10-8 lead. A triple to right center sent in two for UW-Whitewater to force extras.

- After a tenth with little excitement, a fielding error with two outs in the bottom of the 11th proved to be Edgewood College's downfall. A hit by pitch put the unearned runner in scoring position, and a single to center field walked off the game for the hosts.

- Goodwin, Kalafut, and Kyle Prindle were core to the lineup. Goodwin was four-of-six with three runs and a stolen base, while Kalafut and Prindle each were three-of-six. Kalafut had three RBIs and a run, while Prindle had two runs and an RBI.

- The two teams combined for 11 errors, with the Eagles tallying seven.

- The Warhawks staff combined to strike out 18 Edgewood College batters. Leo Stone earned the start, striking out five in four innings pitched.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- UW-Whitewater holds a 14-2 lead in the all-time series. The Warhawks have won both matchups this season.

- The Eagles are 1-2 in extra inning affairs this season. All three have been against nonconference foes.

- The seven errors were a season high for Edgewood College.
