VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad hosted a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader for Senior Day on Sunday. They battled with the Marian Sabres. The Eagles (15-16, 5-10 NACC) walked off a 4-3 game one with a home run, but struggled with the Sabres (13-13, 8-6) bats in a 12-4 loss game two.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4, MARIAN 3
- Both teams had quiet starts before matching blow for blow in the third inning. The Sabres sent in two with a deep double to right, while
Kya Loffswold sent in one off of a bunt that saw
Natalie Fields get in before the tag.
Jenna Sanchez rounded out the scoring with a single to center field.
- A home run derby broke out in the last three innings.
Olivia Hebert kicked things off with a shot to left center in the fifth. Marian matched the moonshot with a solo home run to left field in the sixth.
Gracie Halfman had the final say on the day, walking off the game with a home run to right center off of one of the very first pitches in the seventh.
- Both pitchers tossed complete games.
Gaby Slater earned the victory with four strikeouts.
- Hebert hit two-of-three with two runs and an RBI. Loffswold reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
GAME TWO: MARIAN 12, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 4 (FIVE INNINGS)
- The trouble started early for the Eagles. An error by the shortstop on a fielder's choice allowed a runner to reach third safely and left the bases loaded with a lone out. Small ball let the Sabres take full advantage, with four singles sending six runs home.
- A Sanchez double to right field put Edgewood College on the board, but Marian replied in kind and then some in the top of the second. A pair of two-run shots to left center and center field put Marian up 10-1, while a single to left field scored another.
- The Eagles cut the Sabres lead to seven in the third. A pair of home runs from Hebert and Sanchez put them within 11-4.
- A double steal would prove to be the final blow in the run rule coffin in the fourth, as Marian swiped home before their runner from first was caught at second. Edgewood College would get a runner on first with one out in the fifth to potentially extend the game, but a pop up and a strike out closed the book on the game.
- Three Sabres posted multi-hit games, while seven others had hits. Both Marian pitchers had strong outings, allowing only five hits and a walk.
-
Natalie Fields threw well in relief, allowing only two hits in two innings pitched and a lone run.
- Hebert and Sanchez tallied identical lines at the plate. Each hit two-of-three with a run and two RBIs, and both had a home run.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The doubleheader celebrated Senior Day for
Haylee Kasuboski.
- Hebert's home run was her seventh of the season. The tally puts her in a tie for sixth on the season records list and three behind the single-season record set by Colleen Joyce (2009).
- The Sabres have a 53-38 lead in the all-time series. The Eagles have won three of the last four.
UP NEXT
Edgewood College will host their penultimate home doubleheader next Saturday. They host the St. Norbert Green Knights in further NACC action. The Green Knights hold a 9-4 series lead all time, but the two squads split a doubleheader last year.
