VERONA – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad continued their homestand at Ceniti Park Saturday for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader. They battled with the St. Norbert Green Knights for their Cancer Awareness Game. The two games were very different, but the Eagles (17-16, 7-10 NACC) came out on top with 3-1 and 12-6 margins over the Green Knights (12-21-1, 6-11-1).
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3, ST. NORBERT 1
- Both pitchers put together strong performances, but the Eagles got an early jump and never looked back.
Olivia Hebert launched a shot to center field in the very first at-bat for the hosts, while
Gracie Halfman singled to right to send in what turned out to be the game-winner and an insurance run.
- A home run to center field from the Green Knights gave them a sign of life in the sixth, but a pair of grounders and a strike out sandwiching a walk sealed their fate in the top of the seventh.
- Slater threw an impeccable complete game, striking out three and allowing only three hits in 96 pitches. Addison Race also tossed a strong game in a complete game defeat, holding Edgewood College to three runs and allowing only six hits.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 12, ST. NORBERT 6
-The two teams put more runs on the board in the first inning than they did the entirety of game one. A double and a sacrifice grounder put two on the board for the visitors in the first. The Eagles would put together an impressive rally in the bottom of the frame.
Alyse Maurer sent home two with a double to right field, while Halfman brought in Maurer with a bunt. Slater reached first on what would've been a sacrifice grounder to send in a run and said error from the first baseman allowed Edgewood College to take a 5-2 lead after one.
- The Green Knights kicked off the third with fireworks to right field. A sacrifice fly to left with the bases loaded put them within one, while a single to left field scored a pair and gave them a 6-5 lead.
- The second half of the game was all Eagles.
Jenna Sanchez singled in a run to start the fourth, while Halfman continued her strong day by doubling in Maurer. The fifth was the true nail in the St. Norbert coffin.
Kya Loffswold singled to center with the bases loaded, while Maurer doubled again to send in two. Halfman continued to terrorize the Green Knights and wrapped up the 12-6 final with a two-RBI double to right center.
-
Elizabeth Malarski shined in relief, allowing two hits in five innings pitched while only walking a single visitor.
- Halfman finished the entire day hitting five-of-seven with six RBIs. Maurer posted an impressive game two, hitting two-of-four with four RBIs and three runs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College has now won three straight over St. Norbert. The Green Knights hold a 9-6 series lead.
- Hebert leads the NACC with her eight home runs. She is currently tied for third on the single-season program record list for home runs.
- Malarski broke the single-season hit-by-pitch record on the day. Her 10 breaks the previous mark of nine, set by herself in 2022.
- The Eagles have now won three of their last four games.
