FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles headed up north Sunday for a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) doubleheader. They went up against the Marian Sabres. The Eagles (18-10, 10-4 NACC) had a strong day with a 7-0 victory in game one and an 11-7 victory in game two against the Sabres (13-14, 6-8).
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 7, MARIAN 0
- The Eagles pounced on Sabres mistakes early, as they sent two home in the first off of a throwing error from the shortstop.
- They would tack on insurance runs in the third. A
Joseph Kalafut single down the right field line tallied one, while a pair of bases loaded walks left things at 5-0 after three.
- A fielding error in the fourth scored another, while a wild pitch finalized the 7-0 tally.
- Kalafut and
Cooper Holewinski were the two with multiple hits in the Edgewood College order.
-
Kyle Jungers shined. He threw a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts to his name while only walking three.
GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 11, MARIAN 7
- A sacrifice fly from Holewinski to center field put the Eagles on the board in the top of the first. After the Sabres tied things up with a single up the middle, a sacrifice fly tallied an unearned run followed by a wild pitch to give Marian a 3-1 lead.
- A sacrifice grounder in the second for
Ryan Ambrosy put Edgewood College within one after two.
- Five runs in the fourth swung things firmly into the Eagles' favor. A wild pitch started the rally by scoring Ambrosy, while a grounder from Kalafut gave Edgewood College a 4-3 lead. They'd pile on three more before all was set and done, with a
Kyle Prindle single through the right side, a
Jacob Carney double to left center, and a single from
Daniel Bentivegna left things at 7-3 Edgewood College.
- Marian would close back within one in the bottom of the frame with small ball. A two-RBI single to right field followed by a single through the right side cut the Eagles lead to 7-6.
- The squads would match runs in a quiet stretch of innings. A fielder's choice from
Kyle Prindle scored one in the fifth, while a bases-loaded single in the seventh let the Sabres keep pace. A lineout into double play ended the threat of more runs for the hosts.
- The Eagles would expand their lead to four runs before the day was done. A Bentivegna single to center field and an Ambrosy single down the right field line put Edgewood College in double digits in the eighth, while Holewinski finalized the tally with a single through the left side.
- Seven Eagles had multi-hit days and four posted two RBIs in a team effort. Sagan hit three-of-six with a pair of runs, while Bentivegna reached base four times with two-of-three hitting and two walks.
- Edgewood College put together an impressive team effort pitching-wise too. Four pitchers combined to allow no earned runs and one walk in five and two-thirds innings pitched.
Nick Manthei earned the victory from the glut of bullpen arms.
