STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles women's tennis squad wrapped up their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) tune ups Saturday. They battled with the UW-Stevens Point Pointers. The Eagles (12-8) lost a close one to the Pointers (12-9) in a day that saw three singles matches go to a tiebreaker.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The tone of the match was set early, as
Cecile Fuchs and
Madelyn Connaughty lost a tough 8-6 bout as the number one doubles pair. The pairs of
Jewel Lindwall/
Maddy Coopmans and
Evelyn Taylor/
Ellie Murphy cleaned up doubles nicely though. The no. 2 and 3 pairings respectively each won by 8-2 margins.
- Fuchs bounced back as the no. 1 singles player, piecing together a 6-2, 6-1 victory in top billing. Lindwall dropped as the no. 2 seed in 6-3, 6-3 fashion. Taylor fell in identical 6-2, 6-2 sets as the third singles player to leave things tied at 3-3.
- A crazy match in the fourth slot barely went against Murphy. She lost a 7-6 first set on a 7-3 tiebreaker, but bounced back to force a third set in 6-2 fashion. She fell short in a tough 13-11 tiebreaker to put the Pointers within striking distance of the win.
- Connaughty staved off the Stevens Point victory in no. 5 singles. She won 6-2 before dropping in 7-5 fashion in set two. The tides were in the Edgewood College player's favor this time as she won a 13-11 tiebreaker.
-
Christina Ekkela bounced back from a 6-4 loss in no. 6 singles with the match on the line and forced extra play with a 7-5 victory. She fell short in a hard-fought match, falling 10-8 to lift UW-Stevens Point to a 5-4 victory.
