VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad hit the brakes on conference play Wednesday evening. They hosted the Beloit Buccaneers in a wild affair at Stampfl field. After coming back from being down seven runs at multiple times in the game, a three-run shot in the top of the ninth sent the Buccaneers (17-7) home with a 19-18 victory over the Eagles (13-8).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The trouble started early, as Beloit took advantage of errant pitching to send five runs home before Edgewood College could record an out. A single to left field sent in two more. A
Kyle Prindle single to left field left things at 7-1 after two.
- A two-run homer to right center highlighted the top of the second for the Buccaneers.
Kyle Sagan singled in a run in the bottom of the frame to left field. Another home run in the top of the third would give Beloit a 10-2 lead after two and a half.
- Edgewood College took advantage of sloppy pitching and fielding in the bottom of the third.
Colby Davis was hit by pitch with the bases loaded, while
Daniel Bentivegna scored another with a sacrifice fly to left field. An error by the center fielder allowed
Ryan Ambrosy to reach safely and score a pair to leave things at 10-2.
- After a three-run shot to center field by the Buccaneers left the Eagles approximately where they started, the bottom of the fourth helped Edgewood College keep pace. A balk sent in one, while a crucial error by the right fielder scored a pair and let
Jacob Carney reach third. Davis wrapped up the scoring in the inning with a single to center field to leave Beloit up 13-10.
- The fifth inning proved to be pivotal. A two-run single to center field had the Buccaneers up 15-10, but the Eagles would finally claw back into a dead heat in the bottom of the inning. A two-run shot to right center by Connor Coodwin started the rally, while
Cooper Holewinski got on safely with an error to send in another. A sacrifice fly from Bentivegna tallied another, while Ambrosy tied things up with a single up the middle.
- The Eagles seemed to have control of things after a clean top of the sixth. A wild pitch scored one in the bottom, while a two-run single by Holewinski gave Edgewood College an 18-15 lead. A homer to center from Beloit would leave them within striking distance after eight. Jack Alport would settle things down after the rocky start for the Buccaneers, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. A three-run shot after a rocky start from
Leo Stone in the top of the ninth gave Beloit back the lead and the Eagles were still unable to puzzle out Alford in the bottom of the ninth.
- Edgewood College walked 11 batters in the affair that saw them outhit the Buccaneers 21-11 and the visitors recording four errors to the Eagles zero.
- Goodwin hit four-of-six at the plate with a pair of RBIs and four runs. Holewinski continued his strong streak of play with a three-of-six day with a trio of RBIs.
- The Eagles pitching staff combined to throw 12 strikeouts.
Caden Hough had a stellar performance, fanning five in three innings with two hits and one run allowed.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The 21 hits by the offense and 11 walks by the pitching staff were both season highs. The 19 runs allowed was also a season high, while the 18 runs scored fell just one shy of Edgewood College's season best.
- The two squads are now 3-3 all-time against each other. The last two outings were both won by the road squad.
- Hough tossed his five strikeouts in his first three innings pitched as an Eagle.
