MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad played their first of four games down in Alabama Thursday afternoon. They battled for the first of two games this season with the Castleton Spartans. The Eagles' (1-3) winning run crossed the plate in the second inning as they put together a commanding 12-4 victory over the Spartans (3-4).
HOW IT HAPPENED

Joseph Kalafut took advantage of a walk and a single with no outs to clear the bases with a triple to open the scoring in the bottom of the first. A sacrifice fly to center field from
Jacob Carney finished the scoring in the first. An attempt to steal home failed in the bottom of the second inning, but a wild pitch made it 4-0 Eagles. A
Connor Goodwin single to left field brought in another run. After Goodwin stole second, Kalafut made it three RBIs in two innings with a double to left.
- The two teams traded runs in the fourth inning, with a bases-loaded walk putting Castleton on the board, while a steal and a pair of wild pitches kept the margin at six runs for Edgewood College. An error gave the Spartans the opportunity to bring in a run with a single to left in the top of the fifth, while a bases-loaded double in the sixth put Castleton in striking distance at 7-4.
- A bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth made it 8-4 Eagles. The bottom of the seventh saw Edgewood College tack on four insurance runs. A
Brevin Brisack double batted in the first run of the frame, while a Goodwin single to left put Edgewood College in double-digits. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch followed by a passed ball settled the scoring for the afternoon.
- Kalafut and Goodwin both reached base in all five of their appearances. Kalafut tallied three RBIs, while Goodwin accounted for three runs and two RBIs.

Kyle Jungers earned the victory for the Eagles. He threw six strikeouts and allowed only a single run in four innings pitched.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The matchup was the first-ever meeting between Edgewood College and the Spartans.
