PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball squad continued their stay in Florida Thursday morning. They battled with the UW-Whitewater Warhawks as they continued the Studer's Blue Wahoos Stadium Challenge. The Eagles (5-4) mounted a valiant comeback effort but fell short in a 8-5 loss to the Warhawks (2-0).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A grounder into a double play opened the scoring for the Warhawks in the first, while a single through to center left things 2-0 Whitewater. A
Kyle Sagan single to right put the Eagles on the board in the third, but a double to right and a double to left brought in two unearned runs for the Warhawks third.
- A
Kyle Prindle single to center field helped Edgewood College keep pace, but a pair of unearned runs in the fourth from Whitewater let the eventual winning run cross home plate. A sacrifice fly to left tacked on an insurance run in the fifth.
- The Eagles took advantage of a Warhawk error to strike with bases loaded in the sixth. A
Cooper Holewinski single coupled with a throwing error by the third baseman sent two home, while
Ryan Ambrosy singled to right to cut the Whitewater lead to 7-5.
- A single to left field tacked on another insurance run for the Warhawks, while Edgewood College didn't advance a runner past first in their final three innings at the plate.
- Joey Petit had a strong showing in the start and win for Whitewater. He tossed five strikeouts and allowed two runs in five innings pitched.
-
Joseph Kalafut continued his strong start to the season, hitting two of three with a double and a walk while accounting for two runs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Kalafut's double was his 46th of his career. He's three doubles away from breaking the career record.
- The loss snapped a five-game winning streak.
- Whitewater now holds a 13-2 lead in the all-time series.
