HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Edgewood College Eagles women's tennis squad continued their spring break trip Wednesday. They played against fellow Eagles in Ashbury. Edgewood College (10-4) emerged victorious in a thrilling 5-4 victory over Ashbury (1-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College came out ahead in doubles with a crucial 2-1 advantage.
Jewel Lindwall and
Maddy Coopmans claimed no. 2 doubles in 8-6 fashion, while
Ellie Murphy and
Evelyn Taylor put together an 8-1 clinic in third billing.
Cecile Fuchs and
Madelyn Connaughty battled hard in the top spot but fell 8-5 to Megan Moore and Ariadna Zegarra.
- Murphy kicked off singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the fourth spot. Fuchs pieced together a furious comeback in the top slot, winning 3-6, 7-5, 10-3 over Zegarra. Lindwall fell 6-4, 6-3 to Moore in second billing.
- Taylor fell in no. 3 singles 6-3, 4-6, 9-11 to Mikaela West to keep Ashbury alive in the match.
Christina Ekkela put together what turned out to be a necessary victory in sixth billing. She put together a 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 win to clinch the match for Edgewood College.
- Coopmans battled to the bitter end as the no. 5. She fell 6-3, 5-7, 6-10 to Fernanda Heredia to finish the day.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Four singles matches went to a third set on the day.
- Edgewood College has now won six straight dating back to the fall and remain undefeated on their spring trip.
- The meeting was the first time the two Eagles met in women's tennis.
