Eagles Open Spring Break Trip with Win over D-II Shepherd

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – The Edgewood College women's tennis team opened their spring trip with a Division II opponent. The Eagles claimed 4-1 victory from NCAA Division II program Shepherd University. The Eagles improve their season record to 8-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (8-4) opened up a 1-0 lead over the Rams by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Eagles and Rams played under NCAA Division II scoring, which dictates doubles matches count for one point, best of three. Evelyn Taylor and Christina Ekkela pulled off a 6-0 shutout over Shepherd (1-4) in the No. 3 doubles spot. Maddy Coopmans and Jewel Lindwall were next to earn the 6-0 mark in the No. 2 slot, while Madelyn Connaughty and Cecile Fuchs took home the 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

- In singles play, Coopmans won easily in 6-0, 6-0 fashion in the No. 4 singles slot. Ekkela and Connaughty also earned shutout wins in the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively.

- Fuchs was the final match to finish on Sunday. Falling to Marketa Beladova 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 1 slot.

- Rain forced the final two matches of the afternoon to remain unfinished.

- The Eagles win goes down as the first win over an NCAA Division II opponent since the 2015-16 season. The Eagles earned an 8-1 win over Minnnesota-Crookston, with that match also taking place in Hilton Head.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College continue their spring break trip against Principia College at 1:00 p.m. (EDT) on Monday.
