Game Recap: Softball |

Eagles split two in second day at The Spring Games

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad continued play in Florida Saturday. They battled with the Clarkson Golden Knights and the Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves. The Eagles (6-4) won a 3-1 pitcher's duel against the Golden Knights (1-4), before the Prairie Wolves (11-5) won 11-3 in five innings.

GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3, CLARKSON 1
- Both teams scored runs in the second inning. A sacrifice fly from Camden Shepherd with help from a throwing error by the shortstop gave the Eagles their run, while a single through the left side from the Golden Knights left things tied 1-1.

- The bats for both teams were quiet after as the two squads were locked in a defensive struggle. Edgewood College finally found what they were looking for in the sixth inning. A Jenna Sanchez single to center brought in two runs with two outs to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage. Clarkson would get one runner past first in the last two frames but were unable to do much else.

- Tatum Duff tossed seven innings of one run ball in the victory. She threw two strikeouts and allowed eight hits, but the defense clamped down and kept the Golden Knights to just one run.

-  Sanchez was a key bat in the win, hitting two-of-two and sending home the winning run.

GAME TWO: NEBRASKA WESLEYAN 11, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 3 (5 INNINGS)
- The Prairie Wolves started hot and didn't look back, piling on four in the second and seven in the third. A single to left field opened the scoring for Nebraska Wesleyan, with a double to left making it 2-0. A grounder to second base brought in an earned run while a sacrifice fly to right field tacked on an unearned run to make it 4-0. A Gracie Halfman single to right field put the Eagles on the board down 4-1.

- Small ball continued the Prairie Wolves momentum in the third. A single up the middle followed by one through the left side left it at 6-1. An Emma Alfieri grand slam blew the game wide open, while Nebraska Wesleyan loaded the bases again to walk in a run to wrap up their scoring.

- Sanchez and Natalie Fields each hit singles to short with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third to settle the final tally at 11-3.

- - Kya Loffswold was the most consistent Edgewood College player in the defeated, hitting two-of-three while accounting for a run.

- The Prairie Wolves pitchers fanned eight Eagles in five innings. Rylee Pangborn earned the victory in the start.

- Four from Nebraska Wesleyan had two or more hits in the win. Jenna Kimberling hit three-of-four and accounted for a pair of runs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Both games were the first time the respective squads met in softball.

- The victory against Clarkson was Edgewood College's third in a row overall, while the loss against the Prairie Wolves was the first time the Eagles lost a run-rule game in 2023. If a team is down by eight or more runs after five innings of play, the game ends.
