CLERMONT, Fla. – The Edgewood College Eagles softball squad continued their early 2023 slate with two more games in Florida Monday morning. They battled with the Macalester Scots before a late morning tilt with the Marywood Pacers. The Eagles (7-5) put together an impressive fifth inning to push past the Scots (5-4), before the Pacers (2-0) seized a commanding 13-1 victory in five frames.
GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 10, MACALESTER 6
- Errors helped the Eagles to an early lead over the Scots. A
Kya Loffswold single to the shortstop opened the scoring, while a fielder's choice turned into two unearned runs thanks to throwing errors to make it 3-0 after one. An
Olivia Hebert rocket out of the park through center field left things at 5-0 after the top of the second.
- Macalester struck back in the bottom of the second. Twin doubles to left center brought in three runs, while a fielder's choice to third followed by a single to center tied things up at 5-5 after two.
- After quiet third and fourth innings featuring a total of 15 batters between both teams, Edgewood College broke the game wide open with a five-run fifth. After the first three batters all reached to load the bases, a
Haylee Kasuboski fielder's choice brought in the first run. Hebert tallied what turned out to be the game-winner with a sacrifice fly to right field. The small ball continued as Loffswold singled up the middle for another run, while
Alyse Maurer wrapped up the Eagles scoring with a two-RBI single to center field.
- The Scots stole home in the bottom of the fifth, but never got a runner past first in the last two innings as the Edgewood College defense shut them down.
-
Gaby Slater tossed a complete game and earned the victory, fanning four Macalester batters.
- Hebert went 2-of-3 with a walk, a double, a home run and three RBIs. Loffswold was a perfect four-of-four with two RBIs, while Maurer swung two-of-three with a pair of RBIs and a walk.
GAME TWO: MARYWOOD 13, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 1 (5 INNINGS)
- The Pacers started hot against the Eagles. Small ball started them off on strong footing, a two RBI single up the middle followed by a two RBI single to center field starting things off 3-0. A sacrifice grounder to second, then a single to left field left things 5-0 Marywood after one.
- The Pacers continued their momentum into the second with more power, an Ashdon Clark 2 RBI shot to left field leading off the continued scoring. A bases loaded walk followed by a double to left field lifted the Marywood advantage to double digits, while a grounder to the pitcher settled things at 11-0.
- A passed ball in the third finished the day offensively for Marywood.
Jenna Sanchez prevented the shutout with a single to left field in the fourth.
- Marissa Gregory threw a complete game gem in the victory, facing 17 batters in five innings with only three hits allowed and three Edgewood College batters struck out. She also walked no batters.
- Clark brought the offense, hitting two-of-two with four RBIs and a walk, including a home run. Three others from the Pacers recorded two RBIs, while four in total had a pair of hits.
- Sanchez, Hebert, and Loffswold were the Eagles to make it on base in the defeat.
