Extra innings victory lifts Eagles to sweep in Alabama

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Edgewood College Eagles wrapped up their stay in Alabama Saturday with a doubleheader against nonconference foes. They battled with the Castleton Spartans for the second time this season before facing off against the host Huntingdon Hawks. In two very different games, the Eagles (3-4) won their third straight in a chaotic 16-12 victory over the Spartans (4-6), before claiming a 8-6 10 inning thriller against the Hawks (9-4).

GAME ONE: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 16, CASTLETON 12
- The Eagles had four innings with four runs in the offensive display. They started in the second, with a Brooks Kalscheur sacrifice fly to left field, before Kyle Sagan brought in two with a triple to center. A Connor Goodwin single to center wrapped up the scoring from the Edgewood College side of the inning. The Spartans made it 4-1 after two with a single to third.

- Errors helped the Eagles build their advantage to 8-1 after four. A error by the left fielder brought in two, while a Jared Pit single batted in another run. A wild pitch settled the tally after four.

- The Spartans made a sizable dent in the Edgewood College lead with three in the fifth. They brought in three with the bases loaded with a fielder's choice, a single to right, and a bases loaded walk.

- The Eagles struck back in the sixth with small ball. A Colby Davis single to left followed by a Pit single to center accounted for two of four runs. A wild pitch followed by a single to the shortstop wrapped up the Edgewood College scoring in the inning. Three crossed home for the Spartans in the sixth, a triple to left field tallying two while a sacrifice grounder left the margin at 12-7.

- The Eagles effectively put the game away in the seventh. A Kyle Prindle single to left accounted for the eventual game-winning run. An error by second base followed by a Jacob Carney single to center and a Kalscheur single to center wrapped up the scoring on the afternoon for Edgewood College.

- Castleton would tack on five more before all was set and done. A single to left field followed by a three-run shot made up the Spartans seventh inning, while a single to right field in the eighth inning concluded the scoring for both parties.

- Prindle made the most of his at-bats, hitting four-of-six with three RBIs and three runs. Five other Eagles had a pair of hits on the day, with Sagan, Pit, and Kalscheur also having two RBIs.

- Eight pitchers featured in the victory. Ryan Mixey threw four strong innings in the start and win, fanning three Castleton batters and allowing only three hits. Edgewood College combined to throw nine strikeouts.

GAME TWO: EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, HUNTINGDON 6 (10 INNINGS)
- In a dramatically different scenario from game one, neither team managed much until the third inning. A Sagan single to right started the scoring, while the Hawks did their damage in the bottom of the frame. A double to right, a single to center, and a double to center each had a runner crossing home and made it 3-1 Huntingdon after three.

- Both starting pitchers would record sub-four ERAs, with Gavin Vrana earning a 3.86 in seven innings pitched, while Hall Billings tossed 7.1 IP and a 3.68 ERA.

- The Eagles evened the game with small ball late. A Prindle single to right in the sixth followed by a Jacob Carney bunt tied things up at 3-3 after eight.

- Joseph Kalafut came through in a big way in the ninth, sending a missile out of the park to take the lead back 5-3 after eight and a half. Pitching issues forced extra innings, with a bases loaded walk followed by hitting a batter with a pitch tying the game at 5-5.

- Ryan Ambrosy put Edgewood College back in the driver's seat in the top of the tenth, a single to right field scoring two runs. A double from Sagan brought in Ambrosy to round out the Eagles scoring for the day. The Hawks struggled to muster a response; a sacrifice fly their only run of the bottom frame to close out the victory.

- Aidan Williams earned the victory, while Nick Manthei recorded the save. Sagan and Kalafut were key cogs in the Edgewood College lineup. Sagan hit three-of-six with two RBIs, while Kalafut was two-of-three with two RBIs, two runs, and two walks.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles swept both games against the Spartans this season and are now 4-2 against the Hawks.

- Edgewood College has now won four straight and won all four of their matchups in Alabama.
