Eagles fall to late Majors comeback

JACKSON, Miss. – The Edgewood College Eagles wrapped up their season opening stint down in Mississippi Sunday afternoon. They played against the Millsaps Majors. The Eagles (0-3) struggled to take advantage of runners in scoring position and fell 6-5 to a Majors (4-5) walk off.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a pair of singles and a pair of steals gave Edgewood College runners on second and third with no outs, two infield outs and a strikeout dashed the Eagles' hopes in the top of the first. Edgewood College would still strike first, a Joseph Kalafut single and a Cooper Holewinski sacrifice bunt giving them a 2-0 advantage after the top of the third.

- A leadoff double and three batters hit by pitchers gave the Majors a run while still having bases loaded and no one out in the bottom of the third. Nate Bacskai settled in after, forcing a fielder's choice followed by a pop out and a strikeout to minimize the bleeding and leave the two tied at 2-2 after three.

- The fourth would see Edgewood College and Millsaps exchange equivalent runs once more. A wild pitch put a runner in position for Ryan Ambrosy to bring home with a single to right. An early walk followed by a single gave the Majors a runner on third with no outs. A ground out would bring him home and leave the two tied at 3-3.

- Small ball and wild pitches with two outs turned what seemed like a lost inning into a scoring opportunity for Edgewood College. After a batter was hit by pitch, two singles left the bases loaded. A wild pitch brought in Jackson DeChristina to make it 4-3 Eagles. A Holewinski single made it 5-3 Edgewood College after the top of the seventh.

- Millsaps would tie things back up in the bottom of the seventh. After a pair of outs to start the inning, a double brought in the first run before a bunt with two outs tied the game up at 5-5.

- After a quiet eighth, the bottom of the ninth put the Majors in prime position to pull off a walk off. A leadoff double followed by a sacrifice bunt put a runner at third with one out. A strikeout left Millsaps down to their final batter to avoid extras, but an error allowed the runner on third to reach safely to seal the game.

- Kyle Sagan was 3-of-5 in the loss, accounting for two runs. Connor Goodwin swiped three bases, while Daniel Bentivegna was 3-of-4 at the plate.

- Kyle Jungers and Justin Grosse were the most effective of the six Eagles pitchers that saw the mound in the game, with both allowing no runs while Grosse tossed four strikeouts in two innings.

- Will Cook tabbed the win for the Majors, with their three pitchers combining to fan 12 Edgewood College batters. EJ Ousley accounted for three of Millsaps' runs while hitting 3-of-5 on the afternoon.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Majors are now 2-1 against the Eagles since the 2020 season.

- Edgewood College pitchers continued to excel at tossing strikeouts. In their first three games, all featuring at least five pitchers, they have not thrown less than nine in a game as a team.
