JACKSON, Miss. – The Edgewood College Eagles baseball team continued their opening weekend of the 2023 season down south Saturday. They played against Westminster once again. The Eagles (0-2) forced extras with a two-run ninth inning, but the Blue Jays (2-1) emerged victorious 4-3 after shutting down several scoring opportunities.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College struck first in the bottom of the first inning. A
Joseph Kalafut sacrifice fly to left brought in
Connor Goodwin to give the Eagles their first run. A
Cooper Holewinski single gave them runners on first and third with one out, but a double play ended the threat.
- A sacrifice fly in he top of the second let Westminster bring in a leadoff double to tie the game at 1-1. Edgewood College mistakes would put a runner on third with a lone out in the top of the third, allowing the Blue Jays to take a 2-1 lead after the first three innings.
- The Eagles were unable to capitalize on a leadoff double in the fourth inning and a one-out double in the sixth. Westminster tacked on an insurance run with a series of singles with two outs in the top of the ninth to hold onto a 3-1 advantage.
- A single and a double in the bottom of the ninth gave the Eagles runners on second and third with no outs. A balk brought in the first run, before
Brooks Kalscheur tied things up with a sacrifice bunt. Edgewood College threatened the walk off with two outs and runners on second and third, but a strikeout on a full count forced extras.
- The Blue Jays would strike first in extras, a two-out triple helping them regain the advantage. A leadoff double from Kalafut would immediately put the Eagles in threatening position again in the bottom of the 10th, and a sacrifice bunt would put him at third with an out. Westminster would force a pair of grounders to clinch the game.

Kyle Sagan hit 3-of-5 on the day, while Kalafut was 2-of-3 with a double and an RBI.
Leo Stone was impressive as one of seven Edgewood College pitchers featured in the affair, throwing four strikeouts and allowing only one hit in two scoreless innings pitched. The Eagles staff combined to fan nine batters.
- Spencer Keiser accounted for a run and brought in the game-winning run for the Blue Jays with a triple. Three Westminster pitchers threw 10 strikeouts, with Troy Romero earning the victory.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College has now lost to the Blue Jays in their first two games between the squads.
- The Eagles picked up from where they left off last year with strikeouts, as they have 19 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched so far.
