MADISON, Wis. - The Edgewood College women's basketball team earned their eighth-straight victory with a 78-52 win over Illinois Tech on Wednesday. Balanced shooting and strong defense were the name of the game on Wednesday evening, as the Eagles held the Scarlet Hawks to single digit scoring in the second quarter. The Eagles improved to 10 conference wins, as Vivian Guerrero notched her ninth double-double of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (13-7, 10-3 NACC) got off to a quick 10-0 lead through the first six minutes of action. The Eagles shot a game-high 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the floor in the first quarter and led Illinois Tech (5-14, 3-10 NACC) 22-14 into the second quarter.
- Defense was everything in the second quarter, as the Eagles held the Scarlet Hawks to just four points and took a 24 point (42-18) lead into halftime. Six different Eagles contributed to scoring in the second quarter. The Eagles defense was impressive, holding the Scarlet Hawks to a 6.7 shooting percentage (1-of-15) from the floor and zero percent (0-of-5) from beyond the arc.
- Illinois Tech came out of the locker room determined to make a mark, going on a 9-3 run to begin the third quarter. Edgewood College remained consistent, scoring 20 points and taking a 27-point lead (62-35) into the final 10 minutes of action.
- Â The Eagles biggest lead came with 9:20 on the clock in the fourth quarter, as a layup from Claudia Fieiras secured a 31-point (66-35) advantage.
- Offense never let up for Edgewood College. The Eagles recorded a 44.9 shooting percentage (31-of-69). In addition, 44 of the Eagles 78 points came in the paint.
- Guerrero continued to be a consistent mark for the Eagles, adding 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 shooting from the charity stripe. The sophomore added 12 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Eden Bonser recorded seven points and three assists. Paige Banks and Kallie Norby both finished with eight points.
- Edgewood College continued to dominate the rebounding game, pulling down 54 rebounds, compared to just 33 from Illinois Tech.
- In victory, every Edgewood College player saw time on the floor. An impressive 13 Eagles contributed to the scoring effort, 13 different players dished out an assist, and 14 different players pulled down at least one rebound. In addition, 33 points came off the bench.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College now owns an eight-game winning streak, their best of the season and most since the 2019-20 season. During the 2019-20 season, the Eagles owned a 10-game winning streak to start and a 12-game streak, which included their conference tournament championship victory over Benedictine.
- The Eagles continue to climb the conference standings, currently in fourth place with a chance at the top three (St. Norbert, Aurora, Wisconsin Lutheran) in the coming weeks. Edgewood College owns the second longest active winning streak behind nine straight from NACC leading St. Norbert.
THE OPPOSITION
- Julia Bucci led the Scarlet Hawks with 22 points and three steals. Kaya Jones added 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Grace Goodnough pulled down five rebounds and added three blocks.
