MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In the first conference game of the 2023-24 season, the Edgewood College women's basketball team put together a thrilling victory and defeated Wisconsin Lutheran College 66-65. The Eagles found their stride on both sides of the ball, leading the Warriors 34-27 at halftime. Four Eagles scored in double-digits, as Kenzie Senffner led the Eagles with white-hot shooting from beyond the arc.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In a game that featured 17 lead changes, the Eagles came out on top thanks to a 13 point effort in the fourth quarter. Edgewood College (2-4, 1-0 NACC) and Wisconsin Lutheran (3-3, 0-1 NACC) were all tied up at 53 a piece going into the fourth quarter. There were five lead changes in the final 10 minutes, but the Eagles came out on top, thanks to a 7-4 advantage in the final four minutes. The Warriors has the opportunity to tie the game at the free throw line with zeros on the clock, but a missed free throw by Sam Leisemann solidified the Eagles victory.
- Edgewood College saw their best shooting in the final 10 minutes, going 5-for-7 from the floor good for 71.43 percent. The Eagles also shot 69.23 percent (9-of-13) in a second quarter where they scored a game-high 21 points.
- Wisconsin Lutheran battled back in the third quarter, notching 26 points and shooting a game-best 61.54 percent (8-of-13).
- Senffner impressed from beyond the arc for the Eagles, knocking down 5-of-7 from long and totaling a team-high 15 points on the afternoon. Vivian Guerrero added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. Grace Vesperman and Jayden Nortier joined Senffner and Guerrero in double-digit scoring, both collecting 10 points.
- The Eagles shared the ball well, totaling 16 assists on the afternoon, led by Vesperman and Nortier with four apiece.
THE OPPOSITION
- Sam Leisemann led the Warriors with a 23 point, 10 rebound double-double. Margie Stevens went 8-for-12 from the floor, good for 17 points.
- Meggie Scott dished out three assists and collected seven points.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College snaps a four-game losing streak vs Wisconsin Lutheran. The Eagles last beat the Warriors on February 27, 2021, when they were named NACC North Division Co-Champions.
- The Eagles open conference play with a victory for the first time since the 2020-21 season.
