MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball squad kicked off their 2023-24 season Wednesday night in the Todd Wehr Edgedome. They hosted the Chicago Maroons in nonconference action. The Maroons (3-0) proved to be too much for the Eagles (0-1) to handle as they headed back south with an 89-52 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Chicago could not miss early. They started the game on an 11-0 run including three buckets beyond the arc early. The Maroons dominated in the paint in the first half, outscoring Edgewood College 26-8 as they led 55-31 heading into the locker room.
- Chicago shot 7-of-11 from three-point land and 22-of-30 from the field in the half, while the Eagles hit 10-of-25 from the field and 4-of-10 from beyond the arc.
- The Maroons's advantage grew to 42 point down the stretch, an 84-42 mark with 6:47 remaining in the game. Edgewood College strung together eight unanswered points to cut into the lead, but Chicago finished with a dominant 89-52 mark.
- Three Maroons finished in double figures. Bryce Hopkins and Luke Smith each tallied 17 points, with Hopkins hitting 3-of-4 from the three-point arc. Thomas Kurowski finished with 14 points, while Blake Hawthorne grabbed six rebounds.

Trey Traeder opened his season with 13 points, including 5-of-7 shooting from the field.
Danny Mulcare snagged six rebounds, while
Dawson Hughes swiped three steals.

Cade Ellingson recorded eight points and four assists.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Chicago holds a 4-3 series lead over the Eagles and have won back-to-back outings.
- The three steals by Hughes were a career best for the senior.
