WAUWATOSA, Wis – The Edgewood Eagles women's tennis squad continued their 2022 fall slate Saturday. They traveled to face Wisconsin Lutheran in a Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) showdown. The Eagles (4-3, 4-0 NACC) came out on top for their fourth straight victory, defeating the Warriors (2-4, 1-2) in 9-0 fashion.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The tandem of
Cecile Fuchs and
Ellie Murphy started things right 8-1 in no. 1 doubles, with
Jewel Lindwall and
Maddy Coopmans duplicating the final score in their no. 2 doubles victory. The pair of
Evelyn Taylor and
Madelyn Connaughty capped the three doubles matches with an 8-2 victory.
- Fuchs put together a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory in top singles billing over Katelynn Haskell, while Lindwall held off Jena Smith in 6-1, 7-5 fashion in no. 2 doubles to clinch the Edgewood College victory.
- Murphy put together a strong 6-1, 6-2 performance in no. 3 singles over Izzy Hawley, while Coopmans and
Christina Ekkela continued their strong NACC play in slots five and six respectively. Coopmans earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sky Pope, while Ekkela took home a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mary Meghrian.
- Taylor proved her mettle in the fourth singles slot in the closest matchup of the day. She won set one over Ali Schmidt 6-1, but Schmidt roared back with a 6-0 victory in the second set to force a decisive third frame. Taylor continued her strong first season with Edgewood College by putting together a 10-4 run to clinch another sweep.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles have now won 14 in a row against the Warriors, and are 19-2 since the 2004-05 season.
- Edgewood College has now won four in a row with a 9-0 final tally over conference foes.
UP NEXT
The Eagles will return home for their last match before the ITA Midwest Regional. They will play host to Concordia Wisconsin Sunday at 10:30 a.m. The match will be held at Nielsen Tennis Stadium due to forecasted rain. Edgewood College is 12-9 against the Falcons since 2008 and have won five of the last six in the series.
