Young players shine as Eagles open conference play with 9-0 sweep

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The Edgewood College women's tennis squad started Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) play Saturday morning. They made a road trip to face the Lakeland Muskies. The Eagles (1-3, 1-0 NACC) won 9-0 over the Muskies (1-2, 0-1).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Maddy Coopmans and Madelyn Connaughty teamed up in the top doubles slot to take an 8-1 victory over Mary Blossom and Sadie Conway of Lakeland. Jewel Lindwall and Cassie Henderson followed up with another 8-1 performance in no. 2 doubles over Olivia Heling and Kassidee Webb. Freshman Evelyn Taylor and Christina Ekkela completed the doubles sweep with their first ever doubles victory with Edgewood College, an 8-0 result over Baylee Babcock and Morgan Erbstoesser.
 
- Cecile Fuchs found herself in a battle to start off the singles matches, but won 3-6, 6-0, 10-3 over Heling in the top seed. Lindwall tacked on a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Webb to clinch the match for the Eagles.

- Ellie Murphy and Taylor would post identical 6-0, 6-0 results in the third and fourth singles tilts over Blossom and Babcock respectively. Taylor's victory was her first singles victory as an Eagle.

- Coopmans and Ekkela finished off the perfect 9-0 in slots five and six. Coopmans dealt Conway a 6-1, 6-0 deafeat, while Ekkela beat Clare Kelnhofer 6-0, 6-3 to round out a successful match.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
- Eight different Eagles contributed to the sweep over the Muskies.

- Edgewood College is now 17-0 against the Muskies since 2004 and have swept the last five matches 9-0.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College continues their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule tomorrow morning against Marian University. First serve is scheduled for the home match at 1:30 p.m., moved inside to the Powless Tennis Center due to forecasted rain. The Eagles are 16-0 over the Sabres since 2008, and have won two of the last three matches with 9-0 sweeps.
