Edgewood College splits NACC Twinbill vs Benedictine

VERONA, Wis. – In the battle of the Eagles, the Edgewood College Softball team split with Benedictine University in conference play on Saturday. Edgewood College won the opener 8-4, before falling 14-10 in game two. The Edgewood College win is the first over Benedictine since the 2009 season.

EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 8, BENEDICTINE 4 (GAME ONE)
- Edgewood College (17-15, 10-6 NACC) scored first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead after a double steal on a first and third situation. Benedictine would tie things up a one a piece in the top of the fourth inning, but the Edgewood College offense exploded in the bottom of the frame, scoring five runs. Mackenzie Doherty highlighted the Edgewood College fifth inning, scoring three on a home run to left field.

- Both Eagle teams would add one run in the fifth and sixth frames, and despite a run in the top of the seventh inning from Benedictine, Edgewood College would hold on for the victory.

- Tatum Duff picked up the win for Edgewood College, pitching six innings and striking out two batters.

- Alyse Maurer, Haylee Kasuboski, Grace Ott, and Elizabeth Malarski each notched two hits for Edgewood College. Olivia Hebert, Maurer, Kasuboski, and Ott each knocked doubles in the victory

- The Edgewood College victory is the first win over Benedictine since April 4, 2009. In addition, it is fifth win in history over Benedictine.

BENEDICTINE 14, EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 10 – 8 INNINGS (GAME TWO)
- Benedictine wasted little time getting on the board in game two, scoring two runs in the first inning. Edgewood College took the lead back with a three run second inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Doherty. Edgewood College tacked on one run in the third frame before Benedictine scored a whopping six runs in the fourth.

- Down 9-4, Edgewood College scored two in the sixth and three in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings. A two-run home run from Grace Ott brought Edgewood College within striking distance (9-8), but the tying run would come on an error by the Benedictine shortstop. Despite scoring one run in the bottom of the eighth inning, a five run eighth frame from Benedictine was too much.

- Grace Pustina took the loss in game two, striking out two.

- Doherty led the Eagles bats, going 2-for-4 with 5 RBI and a home run. Grace Ott added another home run for Edgewood College. Ott also recorded 4 RBI. Maurer, Kasuboski, Ott, Jenna Sanchez, and Malarski each recorded two hits.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will head to Marian University on Saturday for another NACC doubleheader. Action from Fond du Lac, Wis. is set for a 2:00 p.m. start.
