VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Baseball team secured a split with Concordia Chicago on Thursday at Stampfl Field. The Eagles dropped the opener, 13-11, before strong pitching and timely hitting in game two, resulting in a 5-3 win.
EAGLES 5, COUGARS 3 (GAME TWO)
- Edgewood College (14-8, 7-3 NACC) and Concordia Chicago (8-14, 3-7 NACC) were tied up at 2 heading into the bottom of the eighth frame in game two. That is when the Edgewood College offense found its way with three runs to take a 5-2 lead.
- After three scoreless innings from both the Eagles and Cougars the game broke open in the bottom of the eighth inning when Edgewood College notched three runs. A single from Connor Goodwin, timely error from the Cougars defense to put Alex Prindle on first base set up a first and third situation as Kyle Sagan came to the plate. Sagan roped a single into left center, scoring Goodwin for the 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, as hard-hit single from Adam Cairo scored Sagan and Prindle.
- The Eagles went into the top of the ninth inning looking to Conner Dunfee to secure the split on the mound. Dunfee allowed no hits and one run but ultimately worked out of a jam to secure the nightcap victory for the Eagles.
- Garrett Redner earned his first start as an Eagles and worked 7.2 innings. Redner struck out a career-high 11 batters and only allowed five hits. Ben Collier earned his second win of the season, coming into the game in the top of the eighth inning and striking out one batter to get the Eagles out of a bases loaded jam.
COUGARS 13, EAGLES 11 (GAME ONE)
- Miscues in the field and pitching was the story of game one, as Edgewood College worked through six pitchers and Concordia Chicago five pitchers. Both teams had costly miscues that resulted in big innings on both sides of the ball.
- Nick Manthei, Will Mossa, and Anthony Schatz combined for five strikeouts. Edgewood College committed five errors which led to four unearned runs for Concordia Chicago.
- Concordia Chicago scored seven times in the top of the eighth inning and took a significant 13-7 lead. The Eagles scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, as a pair of singles from Ryan Ambrosy and Goodwin set things up for a 2 RBI double off the bat of Sagan for the first run of the ninth. One batter later, Sagan would come around to touch home on a fielding error from the Cougars. Cairo plated Joseph Kalafut on a single to center field, but a pitching change from the Cougars stifled the Eagles comeback.
- Kalafut would end with four hits, three runs, and an RBI. Jacob Slonim added four hits and one run. In total, the Eagles notched 21 hits, while the Cougars collected 16 hits.
- The Edgewood College defense turned three double-plays in game one, one to end the first inning and another to end the second inning.
