MADISON, Wis. – Junior Jake Schroeckenthaler picked up his 1,000th career-point Wednesday night, as the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team picked up an 87-83 NACC win over Benedictine University. Edgewood College led by seven points at halftime and held on to the victory behind 52.5 percent shooting from the floor, 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc, and 90.9 percent shooting from the charity stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (9-12, 8-6 NACC) took their first significant lead of the game with 12:42 remaining in the first half. Edgewood College went on a 7-0 run that began with a layup from Eli Hartjes to take an 18-11 lead.
- The Edgewood College offense went into half time with a 46-39 advantage over Benedictine University (10-11, 9-6 NACC). Edgewood College shot 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from three-point range in the first half and knocked down 11-of-12 (91.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
- With just under five minutes remaining in the second half Benedictine would go on a 16-7 run and come within two points (85-83) of Edgewood College. With nine seconds on the clock Edgewood College put the ball in the hands of Eli Hartjes, who knocked down two free throws and solidified the 87-83 victory.
- Schroeckenthaler made his 1,000th career point with his eighth basket of the game, coming with 2:37 left in the second half. He finished down low to reach the milestone.
- Hartjes led the Edgewood College offense with 31 points on 13-for-20 shooting from the floor and 4-for-4 shooting from the charity stripe. Avery Lyons knocked down a season-high 20 points and did so by connected on 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Schroeckenthaler collected an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. Caden Nelson was the fourth Edgewood College player scoring in double-figures with 11 points.
- Nelson and Hartjes shared the ball well, each dishing out four assists. Schroeckenthaler and Lyons recorded three and two steals, respectively.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Schroeckenthaler began his career at Viterbo University in La Crosse where he played one season and scored 346 points. The Junior notched 228 points during the 2020-21 season with the Eagles and has amassed 427 points during his 2021-22 campaign.
- The win gives the Eagles the season sweep over Benedictine University. Edgewood College now owns a 16-14 advantage in the all-time series.
THE OPPOSITION
- Four Benedictine players scored in double-figures, with Marvin Agwomoh connecting on 23 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the floor. Nick Kosich, Cade Ellingson, and Trevor Montiel scored 19, 13, and 14 points respectively.
