Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

NACC-Leading WLC Downs Eagles Despite Schroeckenthaler's Career Night

MILWAUKEE – Jake Schroeckenthaler scored a career-high 38 points, but it wasn't enough as the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team fell 84-74 at first-place Wisconsin Lutheran College on Thursday night.

WARRIORS 84, EAGLES 74
- Schroeckenthaler was dominant inside for the Eagles (8-11, 7-5 NACC) as he finished the game with 38 points on 16-of-22 shooting, while going 6-for-7 from the foul line. He also led all players with 12 rebounds, posting his NACC-leading 11th double-double of the season.

- Despite his big night, the Warriors (14-5, 9-4 NACC) were able to pick up the win with first place in the NACC standings on the line. Edgewood College scored the game's first two points, but that would be its only lead of the night as Wisconsin Lutheran controlled play the rest of the way. The Warriors jumped out to an 18-8 lead and built a 50-39 advantage in the opening half.

-  The Eagles got within two a couple different times in the second half, including at 62-60 after another Schroeckenthaler basket with 8:05 remaining. The Warriors then rattled off 11-straight points, taking a 73-60 lead with 4:19 remaining. The Eagles didn't stop the run until Adam Baierl made a 3-point shot with 2:57 left, ending a 5:06 scoring drought. Edgewood College wouldn't get any closer than 10 the rest of the way as the Warriors picked up the 84-74 win.

- Eli Hartjes also posted a double-double for Edgewood College, scoring 14 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Avery Lyons dished out a career-high 11 assists in the game, as he has 19 assists over two games this week. Caden Nelson chipped in with nine points.

- The Warriors were led by Alex VanCrete, who scored 18 points, while Drew Bernhagen added 11. Both teams shot well from the free throw line, but Wisconsin Lutheran got to the line 11 more times and made eight more free throws. The Eagles finished the night 16-for-17 from the line, while Wisconsin Lutheran was 24-of-28.

- Edgewood College shot better from the floor as well, making 28-of-61 (45.9 percent) compared to the Warriors 41.5 percent (27-for-65) effort.  The Warriors advantage from distance also proved to be a difference, making 6-of-18 (33 percent), while the Eagles shot just 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from 3-point range.

- Edgewood College did finish the game with 21 assists on 28 made field goals, with Lyons's 11 assist being a big reason why.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The NACC Men's Basketball standings are tight at the top. A win on Thursday would have moved the Eagles into a tie for first place at 8-4. Instead, the Eagles are now sixth in the NACC standings. Wisconsin Lutheran leads at 9-4 but they are slightly ahead of Benedictine (8-4), Concordia Wisconsin (9-5), Concordia Chicago (7-4), St. Norbert (8-5), the Eagles (7-5), Illinois Tech (6-5) and Marian (7-6). The top three teams will get an opening round bye in the NACC Tournament.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will visit Marian for another important league game on Saturday. The contest from Sadoff Gymnasium in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin is set for a 4:15 p.m. tip and will follow the women's game, which will start at 2 p.m.
