JACKSON, Miss. – The Edgewood College Baseball team dropped its 2022 season opener at Millsaps, 5-4. The Eagles trailed 5-0, before rallying with four runs, but the host Majors escaped with the one-run win.
MAJORS 5, EAGLES 4
- It's understandable if the Eagles (0-1) came out slow as they were a team playing outside for the first time this year against a squad who was playing its 11th game. Millsaps (8-3) took advantage with a run in the bottom of the first and three in third. They would tack on a run in the fourth inning in building a 5-0 lead. Mason Little belted a three-run home run in the third, highlighting the strong start for the Majors.
- The Eagles first run of 2022 came in the fifth inning when
Adam Cairo drove in
Cooper Holewinski. Holewinski scored two of the Eagles four runs on Friday.
- Holewinski's second run came in the seventh inning, scoring on a wild pitch to bring the Eagles within three. They would add two runs in the top of the eighth, the first on an RBI single by
Kyle Sagan, plating
Joseph Kalafut.
Colby Davis then walked with the bases loaded, plating
Jacob Slonim.
- Millsaps escaped further damage in the eighth inning by getting a flyout to left to end the Eagles threat. Edgewood College then went down in order in the top of the ninth.
-
Nick Holland was the pitcher of record for the Eagles, throwing the first three innings and allowing four runs, but just one earned. Four Eagles relievers (
Eric Nelson,
Garrett Redner,
Ben Collier,
Kyle Semrad) combined to give up just one run the rest of the way with Nelson, Redner, and Semrad striking out multiple batters.
- Wil Wood gave up just two runs in seven strong innings to get the win for the Majors. He struck out eight before handing the ball off to Ryan Erwin, who worked two innings for his second save of the year.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow with a game against MUW, once again being played at Twenty Field and being hosted by Millsaps. First pitch is set for noon.
