MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Eagles men's basketball hosted their second of four November home games Saturday afternoon. They hosted the UW-Stevens Point Pointers at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The Eagles (0-2) set pace for most of the game, but fell to a late Pointer (3-1) comeback in a 75-71 loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stevens Point jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of play A 14-4 Edgewood College run dominated the next four minutes of play, with a pair of threes from
Drew Houtakker fueling the barrage as they took a 14-11 edge. The squads would battle back to a 16-16 tie, but layups and a triple from
Trey Traeder would put Edgewood College back ahead 25-19 just over the halfway point of the period.
- The Pointers would close within one at 27-26 Eagles with 7:28 remaining in the half. A pair of steals by Myles Coleman lead to four points for Stevens Point in the run. The Eagles would reply with three straight layups in just over a minute for their largest lead of the half at 33-26, but a 10-4 Pointer rally pushed them within one. A pair of
Jake Schroeckenthaler free throws would send Edgewood College to the locker room up 39-36.
- The Eagles outshot Stevens Point 54.84 (17-of-31) to 48.28 (14-of-29) from the field in the frame.
- Edgewood College would cling to their slim margin for most of the first ten minutes of the second half, never leading by more than four points. The Eagles lead would finally fall to a Pointers three at 10:51, the 55-54 advantage their first since 15:30 in the first half. Edgewood College would reclaim their advantage with a Traeder bucket beyond the arc at 7:45 and clung to it until the Pointers tied it back up at 63 all with 5:33 left. A three-pointer from
Cade Ellingson tied it back up at 4:23, but a pair of Stevens Pointer jumpers would give them a 70-66 edge heading into the final 2:51.
- Neither team would score again until :45 with a pair of Pointer free throws bolstering their lead to 72-66 over the Eagles. A steal from Adam Baier followed up by a Stevens Point turnover would lead to a 5-0 Edgewood College run, with Houtakker sinking another three to close within one with :16 left. The Pointers would break Eagles hearts with three straight points, a free throw followed by an offensive rebound into a pair of made free throws to close the door on a hard-fought battle.
- Schroeckenthaler had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 14 rebounds, including seven offensive. Houtakker, Traeder, and
Cade Ellingson rounded out the double-digit scorers with 15, 14, and 14 respectively. Houtakker had eight rebounds, while Traeder had a pair of steals.
- Stevens Point went 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, while Edgewood College shot 6-of-12. The Pointers made 52.9 percent of their threes (9-of-17) compared to the Eagles shooting 46.7 (7-of-15). Jake Buchanan was a force for Stevens Point with a game-high 25 points, while Landon VanCalster finished with 11 points and sunk all three of his beyond the arc shots.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Ellingson, Houtakker, and Traeder all set their single-game Edgewood College career highs for scoring.
- The Pointers are now 29-3 against the Eagles since 1987-88 and have won the last two outings by a combined six points.
