MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Tennis team began its quest for a fourth-straight NACC regular season championship with a 7-2 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College (2-4, 1-2 NACC) on Saturday at Quann Park. The Eagles (1-4, 1-0 NACC), who opened the season with four non-conference matches, were playing their first league match of the 2021-22 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College started the day with two wins over three doubles matches. The No. 1 duo of
Cecile Fuchs and
Ally Verbauwhede put Edgewood College on the board first with an easy 8-1 victory in their doubles bout.
-
Alyssa Carew and
Ellie Murphy put another point on the board for the Eagles before singles play with a convincing 8-2 victory.
- Fuchs, Carew, Verbauwhede, and Murphy were then penciled into the lineup in the No. 1 through 4 positions for singles play and all four delivered straight-sets wins. Fuchs was the first to finish, as the sophomore who has still lost only one singles match over her career remained unbeaten in her NACC singles career with a 6-0, 6-2 win.
- Carew gained a 6-1, 6-4 No. 2 singles victory, while Murphy had little trouble in her No. 4 singles contest, a 6-2, 6-2 decision. Verbauwhede and the Warriors Kaytlyn Hartfield had a great match, but Verbauwhede was able to outlast Hartfield in both sets, winning 7-5, 7-5.
-
Maddy Coopmans added a No. 5 singles victory for the Eagles, winning 6-2, 6-1.
