WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The Edgewood College Baseball team entered Saturday's NACC North road doubleheader at Wisconsin Lutheran College in desperate need of two wins. The Eagles made sure they got those two wins by scoring 15 runs in each game, highlighted by record-breaking performances from
Cooper Holewinski and
Jacob Slonim, in a sweep over Wisconsin Lutheran. The Eagles won both games via the run rule, the opener 15-3 and game two, 15-4.
EAGLES 15, WARRIORS 3 (F/7) – GAME ONE
- Holewinski and Slonim set their new Eagles records in the opener. It was the
Cooper Holewinski show in game one as he launched two grand slams and drove in nine runs. The nine RBI is the most in a game in program history, surpassing eight by Tom Jury in 1992.
- Slonim added two home runs of his own to bring his single season total to nine. He broke the Eagles single season mark previously held by Josh Gauwitz (2000), Pat Kelter (2002), and Tim Barry (2010). Slonim finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI. His three-run home run in the fourth was part of a five-run inning that put Edgewood College up 10-0 at the time.
- Holewinski and Slonim went back-to-back in the seventh inning to put the game away. Holewinski's other grand slam came in the top of the second inning.
- While the Eagles were scoring plenty of runs,
Kyle Jungers made sure to take advantage of it with a quality start. Jungers went the distance, throwing seven innings and striking out five, while allowing three runs, one earned.
-
Adam Cairo added two doubles for the Eagles in the opener as Edgewood College finished the game with 13 hits.
Bryan Niznik scored three times, while
Alex Prindle and
Max Orput each scored twice.
EAGLES 15, WARRIORS 4 (F/7) – GAME TWO
- Holewinski didn't stop after game one as he drove in five more runs in the second contest to finish with 14 RBI for the day. He tripled twice in game two and scored two times to complete a memorable day for the Eagles nine hitter.
- Edgewood College held a 7-4 lead in game two before erupting for eight runs in the top of the sixth inning. The highlight of the inning was when Holewinski came up with the bases loaded again. Rather than hit a third grand slam, the outfielder roped a bases-clearing triple.
- The Eagles tallied 12 hits in game two with
Joseph Kalafut leading the way with a 3-for-4 performance, which included a double, two runs, and two RBI. Slonim also doubled and went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Orput scored three runs in the contest.
- Prindle went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and
Kyle Semrad also scored twice for the Eagles in the second game.
- It was
Nick Holland who took advantage of the run support in game two as he went the distance, striking out six and surrendering four earned. Getting two complete-game efforts from their starters is big for the Eagles with two more games left in the weekend series against the Warriors.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Holewinski also tied the single game home run and triples record on Saturday. Three other Eagles (Zack Creekmore, Andrew Handorf, Alex Jaskulski) have two triples in a game. A convocation of Eagles have hit two home runs in a game, including Slonim twice this season now.
