Baseball winning streak snapped by Benedictine

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Baseball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Wednesday as it was swept by Benedictine University in a non-conference doubleheader. Benedictine took game one of the battle of the Eagles, 6-5, before completing the sweep with an 8-5 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (6-11) scored first in the opener when Kyle Semrad came around to score off an error by Benedictine (9-6). The 1-0 lead would hold until a four-run third inning for Benedictine.

- Edgewood College got back in the game via the long ball. Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Joseph Kalafut launched his fifth home run of the season to bring Edgewood College within two. Two innings later, Jacob Slonim tied Kalafut for the team home run lead with a two-run blast of his own.

- Benedictine would score the eventual winning run in the top of the eighth, also via the home run. Jack Feeley belted a solo blast to right-center field to break the tie. Edgewood College couldn't push a run across in the eighth or ninth frames, resulting in a game one win for Benedictine.

- Kalafut paced Edgewood College at the plate with three hits, including the home run. He and Slonim both drove in two runs, while Alex Prindle added a double. Feeley led Benedictien at the plate with three hits, including the go-ahead home run.

- Kalafut also got the start on the mound and struck out seven over five innings of work. Peyton Henry threw two scoreless frames with two strikeouts and Leo Stone went down as the pitcher of record, allowing one run, while striking out two in two innings of work.

- In the nightcap, Benedictine jumped out to a 5-0 lead with two runs in the first and three in the top of the fourth. Jack Surin belted a two-run home run in the first inning to get Benedictine on the board.

- Edgewood College would again get back in the game via the long ball. They would score four times over their next three half innings at the plate. Slonim belted his second home run of the day, a solo blast in the fourth inning, while Prindle launched a two-run home run down the right-field line in the sixth inning, bringing the score to 6-4. The margin would get no closer than two the rest of the way as Benedictine ended up with an 8-5 victory.

- Ben Collier got the start and allowed five runs, just three earned, in 4.1 innings. Luka Goard, Will Mossa, and Eric Nelson all did not allow an earned run, each throwing one-inning relief appearances. Garret Redner also threw 1.2 innings for Edgewood College in game two.

- Slonim had two hits, including the home run and ended up as one of four Eagles to collect two hits in the second contest. Kyle Sagan, Prindle, and Adam Cairo all tallied two hits with one of Cairo's going down the left-field line for a double.

UP NEXT
- Edgewood College will wrap up the current eight-game homestand with two NACC North games against Lakeland University on Saturday. First pitch from "The Chuck" is set for 12 p.m.
