VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Baseball team saw their first seven inning and extra inning game of the season on the same day, defeating Marian University 10-0 in game one and falling 11-8 in the extra-inning nightcap. The Eagles offense put on a clinic in game one, collecting 15 hits. Kyle Jungers pitched the complete-game shutout in game one.
GAME ONE – EAGLES 10, SABRES 0 (7 INN.)
- The Edgewood College (9-18, 3-7 NACC) bats were on fire in game one as every single Eagle collected a hit. Kyle Sagan led the way as he went 3-for-3 and scored three runs. Cooper Holewinski added two doubles, while Bryan Niznik went 2-for-3 and added four RBI.
- On the mound, Kyle Jungers pitched a complete game and earned his second win of the season. The sophomore only allowed the Sabres three hits through seven innings of work. He struck out one batter.
- The Eagles took charge in the third inning, as Joseph Kalafut homered to right center field and scored two runs for a 3-0 lead. With two outs Niznik would score Alex Prindle and Sagan with a single down the left field line, giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
- Edgewood College would add two more runs in the fourth frame and three in the sixth frame to take the 10-run lead. The Eagles found timely hits in the bottom of the sixth frame, as Adam Cairo came across home plate scoring the eighth run off a sacrifice fly from Prindle. Niznik plated the 10th run on a double in the left center field gap, scoring Kyle Semrad from third base.
- The Eagles totaled 15 hits as a team in the first contest. Cairo, Orput, Niznik, and Holewinksi each recorded two hits in the victory.
GAME TWO – SABRES 11, EAGLES 8 (10 INN.)
- Game two was a back-and-forth affair, as the Sabres and Eagles saw the score tied on three separate occasions in the extra inning contest. The Eagles scored first, adding two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Marian University (11-17, 7-3 NACC) responded quickly, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
- The Eagles bats continued to work, scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the Sabres at four. In the bottom of the seventh inning the Eagles would once again add two runs, tying things up at six. Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning the Eagles were down 7-6, but expertly moved runners into scoring position. With just one out, Semrad scored Kalafut on a sacrifice fly to left field to send the game into extra innings.
- The Sabres took advantage of the Eagles pitching woes in the tenth inning, scoring four runs to take an 11-7 lead. Edgewood College would score one run in the bottom of the 10th inning, but it wasn't enough to earn the win.
- Kalafut and Sagan both collecting three hits for the Eagles, each with a double. Max Orput added a double for Edgewood College.
- Ricky Lee had a big game for the Sabres, recording two hits, belting a home run, and collecting five RBI.
- Robbie Knorr collected the win for the Sabres, pitching 1.2 innings and striking out one Eagle. Taylor Middaugh collected four strikeouts through six innings on the mound.
