Eagles rally in game two, split NACC twinbill with Muskies

VERONA, Wis. – The Edgewood College Baseball team needed a win badly in game two of Monday's doubleheader against Lakeland University. After dropping the first three games of a four-game series with Lakeland, the Eagles rallied for 9-4 win in game two on Monday night to secure a split in the league doubleheader. Edgewood College fell 5-0 in the opener before rallying in the nightcap.

GAME TWO – EAGLES 9, LAKELAND 4
- The Eagles (7-14, 1-3 NACC) trailed 4-1 heading into the seventh-inning stretch in game two. That is when the Edgewood College offense found its way with three runs in the seventh and five runs in the eighth. The Eagles were aided by some poor Lakeland (7-7, 3-1 NACC) defense as well in game two as seven Muskie errors helped lead to four unearned runs in the contest.

- The game broke open in the bottom of the eighth when Edgewood College scored five times. A pair of singles by Kyle Semrad and Max Orput set the stage and Bryan Niznik was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with Eagles with one out. Cooper Holewinksi hit a shot down the third base line to score Connor Zagrodnik, who was pinch running for Semrad, to give the Eagles their first lead of the day at 5-4.

- Jacob Slonim was then hit by a pitch to push the Eagles lead to 6-4 and that is when the Muskies fell apart. A passed ball and two throwing errors plated two Eagles runs and on the next pitch a wild pitch scored Slonim to make the score 9-4. Nelson, who came on in the seventh inning, would get the last three outs in the ninth to secure the split for Edgewood College.

- Nelson worked three innings and allowed one earned run to go along with four strikeouts for his second win of the season. Joseph Kalafut got the start and worked 5.2 innings with three runs allowed and eight strikeouts. Leo Stone retired the only batter he faced in the sixth inning.

- Holewinski finished the game with two hits, including the go-ahead single in the eighth. Slonim went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three runs scored from the top of the Eagles lineup. Connor Goodwin and Semrad each added two hits.

GAME ONE – LAKELAND 5, EAGLES 0
- The story of game one was the right arm of the Muskies Nathan Hemmerling. The Lakeland sophomore threw a complete game one-hitter as he had the Eagles lineup off balanced all afternoon. Hemmerling struck out 10 batters in his win.

- Ben Collier and Nick Holland threw well for the Eagles in the game, each allowing one earned run over four-plus innings of work. Edgewood College committed a pair of errors which led to three unearned runs for Lakeland.

- Lakeland scored four times in the fifth inning and added a run in the sixth in the opener. Adam Cairo ended up with the lone Eagles hit, a single up the middle in the second inning.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will play a four-game series with Concordia University Wisconsin this coming weekend. The first two games will be Saturday at Kapco Park in Mequon, Wisconsin with the first pitch set for noon.
