Eagles net convincing non-conference win over Wartburg

MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Women's Tennis team netted its second-straight win to start the 2021 season, defeating Wartburg College 8-1 on Saturday night. The Eagles swept doubles play and won five-of-six in singles play to take down the Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (2-0) was welcoming a Wartburg (14-6) team that was playing its 20th match of the season. The Knights had a full fall season and have already played nine times this spring as well. The Eagles showed no rust early in the season, sweeping the three doubles matches to start off the night.

- The No. 1 duo of Cecile Fuchs and Ally Verbauwhede netted an 8-5 win, while the No. 2 team of Sydney Verbauwhede and Ellie Murphy picked up an 8-6 victory. Alyssa Carew and Kinsey Kessel added an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles as the Eagles built a comfortable lead heading into singles.

- Singles play was controlled by Edgewood College as well. Fuchs remained unbeaten in her rookie season with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Sydney Verbauwhede added a singles win for the second-straight night, winning 6-1, 6-2.

- Ally Verbauwhede and Murphy also finished the night 2-0 with wins in singles matches. Ally Verbauwhede won 6-2, 6-1, while Murphy gained a 6-4, 7-5 win.

- Lydia Dean moved her singles record to 2-0 on the season with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win in her No. 5 singles bout.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The Eagles are now 4-0 against Wartburg dating back to the 2008 season. Edgewood College has defeated the Knights in 2008, 2018, and 2019, the last three of those matches coming during the spring season.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will conclude a busy opening weekend with a trip to face Lakeland in NACC play tomorrow morning. The match at Kohler Sports Core is set for 10 a.m.
