VERONA, Wis. – Lauren Ludvigsen delivered six solid frames in her second career start and the Edgewood College Softball team put it all together for game one of a doubleheader split against Marian University on Monday at Ceniti Park. The Eagles won the opener in six innings, 10-2, before Marian secured the split with a 4-0 win in game two.
GAME ONE – EAGLES 10, SABRES 2
- Ludvigsen impressed in game one by not allowing an earned run over her six innings pitched. Marian (9-7) scored twice in the first inning as a result of a couple Edgewood College errors. Still Ludvigsen didn't get rattled as she went all six innings, allowing just five hits and striking out three. It was just the second career start in the circle for the Eagles freshmen.
- The Eagles (7-15) made sure to get Ludvigsen the run support she deserved in the opener. After falling behind 2-0, Edgewood College scored once in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second.
Haylee Kasuboski singled in Ludvigsen in the first, while
Hanna Fisher and Ludvigsen delivered run-scoring singles in the second.
- The 3-2 score would remain until the fifth inning when the Eagles added a couple more runs. Edgewood College would then put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Fisher ended the game with a deep single to left field, scoring both
Mackenzie Hoffman and
Emily Bloomfield.
- Bloomfield finished the game with three hits, while Fisher drove in a team-best three runs with a 2-for-5 performance at the plate. Kasuboski added two hits, scored twice, and drove in two runs. As a team, Edgewood College totaled 12 hits in the contest with eight different players collecting at least one hit.
GAME TWO – SABRES 4, EAGLES 0
- Emalee Depa of Marian wasn't going to allow the Sabres to be swept on Monday as she silenced the Eagles bats in the nightcap. Depa tossed the complete game shutout with seven strikeouts, while allowing just four hits.
-
Emily Bloomfield went the distance herself in game two. Bloomfield scattered nine hits and struck out two, while surrendering the four runs. Bloomfield put up six zeroes for the Eagles, but Marian's four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference.
- Alexa Rodriguez belted a two-run home run in the fourth for Marian. She finished the game with two hits.
- The Eagles received this from four different players with Ludvigsen doubling in the first inning.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Monday was a good time to measure how far the Eagles have come in a month since the 2021 season began. The Eagles opened the season with two games against Marian on February 25 in Peoria, Illinois. Edgewood College lost both of those games by eight-plus runs. The Eagles have certainly improved and the second half of the season should be exciting.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will visit Lakeland University for two games on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at Muskie Softball Field in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
