VERONA, Wis. – It was a hitter's day at Stampfl Field, as the Edgewood College Baseball team tallied 33 hits and 27 runs to take home two wins against Concordia Chicago. The Eagles rallied for a 13-12 win over the Cougars in the nightcap, won on a walk-off home from Joseph Kalafut. In game one, the Eagles earned the 14-11 victory, with Kalafut and Jacob Slonim each hitting a home run.
EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 13, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO 12 (GAME TWO)
- The Eagles bats continued to roll in the second game, scoring four runs in response to two runs from Concordia Chicago in the top of the first inning. Slonim sent his second home run of the day over the left field fence to get the Eagles going. Alex Prindle would score two more Eagles on a double to right center. Kyle Semrad knocked in the Eagles fourth run of the game on a single to right field.
- Edgewood College would add four more runs in the bottom of the second frame, with Slonim adding a three-run home run to left center field.
- The Eagles trailed 11-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday, but rallied for four runs to re-take the lead at 12-11. Connor Goodwin got things going with a bunt single to second base. From there, the Eagles took advantage of a Cougar error, scoring Goodwin in the next at bat. Cooper Holewinski scored from third base on a wild pitch, giving the Eagles their tenth run. Bryan Niznik scored with bases loaded, after Prindle was hit by a pitch, tying things up at 11. The Eagles lead would come just one at bat later, as Slonim scored from third on a walk from the Cougars.
- Going into the bottom of the ninth inning, Edgewood College (4-9) and Concordia Chicago (2-6) were tied up at 12 apiece. With just one out, Kalafut delivered the big hit in the frame, sending the ball over the left field fence to give the Eagles the 13-12 victory in walk-off fashion.
- Leo Stone delivered a strong appearance on the mound for the Eagles, throwing four innings and striking out four. Eric Nelson picked up the win for Edgewood College by recording the final two outs in the ninth inning.
- Slonim collected four hits and drove in four runs to pace the Eagles offense. Sagan and Prindle joined the offensive attack with three hits each, while Kalafut scored three runs.
EDGEWOOD COLLEGE 14, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO 11 (GAME ONE)
- In game one it was a seven run second inning that made all the difference for the Eagles. Niznik got things going for the Eagles with a single to center field, scoring Holewinski. Slonim smashed his first home run of the day over the left field fence, scoring three runs for the Eagles and putting them on top, 6-2. Semrad would score two more off a single to right center, while Adam Cairo scored one more run on a sacrifice bunt to give the Eagles a commanding 9-2 lead over the Cougars.
- Concordia Chicago responded back with a five run third inning, pulling within two of the Eagles (9-7). Edgewood College would score three more runs with two coming in the fifth frame, and a home run from Kalafut in the seventh frame for the 14-11 final.
- Garrett Redner earned the win on the mound, striking out three through 2.1 innings pitched. Eric Nelson came in for the save, striking out one in the ninth inning.
- Slonim and Kalafut collected three hits each, as Slonim, Sagan, and Cairo drove in three runs each.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE
- Edgewood College earns their first sweep of the season and their third straight victory.
- The last time the Eagles defeated the Cougars came back in April 12, 2016. Edgewood College earned the 6-4 win over Concordia Chicago at Stampfl Field.
- The Eagles earned their first ever sweep over the Cougars. The first meeting between the Cougars and Eagles came in 2007. With the two wins, the Eagles improve their overall record against Concordia Chicago to 6-26.
- Slonim had the best two games of his career at the plate for the Eagles, collecting a personal best four hits and four RBI in the second game. Slonim added three home runs, with just the second of his career as an Eagle coming in game one
- Joseph Kalafut hit his first and second home runs as an Eagle, his second being the walk-off for the game two victory. The Columbus, Wis. native had his best games at the plate on the season, collecting three hits and four runs in the game one win.
