MADISON, Wis. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team knew it faced a tall task Friday night as it welcomes Concordia University Wisconsin for a NACC matchup. The Falcons entered as one of the top scoring teams in the conference and the Eagles responded with an outstanding defensive effort in a thrilling 67-64 win. The win was the fourth-straight overall for Edgewood College, which moved to 3-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was back-and-forth all night with neither team leading by more than eight points. With the Eagles trailing by four points with just under seven minutes left,
Matthew Myers buried a 3-point shot to bring them within a point at 55-54. From that point on neither team led by more than three points.
- Edgewood College (6-2, 3-0 NACC) took the lead for good with 1:22 left when
Jake Schroeckenthaler scored through contact. He would miss the free throw but the Eagles led 63-62. After a defensive stop, Myers put the Eagles up three as he drove the lane and scored with the floater for the 3-point advantage.
- CUW would get back within one on a layup with 14 seconds to go, but Myers calmly stepped up to the line and made two huge free throws to put the Eagles back up three. With 11 seconds left,
the Edgewood College defense held strong, pulling off the three-point win.
- Edgewood College and Concordia Wisconsin (2-2, 1-2 NACC) entered as two of the top scoring teams in the conference, but defense was the story on Friday night. The Eagles held the Falcons to 39.3 percent shooting (24-for-61) and forced 13 turnovers.
-
Jake Graf played a big role in that defensive effort as he drew the assignment of Jordan Johnson, a player averaging 25.7 points per game entering play. Johnson was held to just 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting.
- Graf also helped lead the Eagles offense with 14 points, while
Jake Negus also added 14. Schroeckenthaler chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds for Edgewood College.
Ryan Buss led the team with eight rebounds.
- If there was an area the Eagles will look to improve upon heading into tomorrow it is at the free throw line. Edgewood College made just 8-of-18 from the foul line, while CUW went 14-for-18.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The win snaps a 10-game skid against Concordia Wisconsin for Edgewood College. The last Eagles win over the Falcons came nearly six years ago to the date. On February 4, 2015, the Eagles won 81-79 at CUW behind 19 points from Trevor Neale.
UP NEXT
- These two teams will meet again tomorrow at 5 p.m. inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
