MADISON, Wis. – For a second-straight night the Edgewood College and Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Basketball programs put on a good game inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome. Unfortunately, Saturday's result ended up different from Friday's as the Eagles fell 76-72.
Jake Schroeckenthaler scored 24 points to lead Edgewood College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles (6-3, 3-1 NACC) led just once on Saturday, but it was with 1:10 remaining after
Jake Negus made a jump shot in the paint. An unlikely hero emerged for the Falcons on the ensuing possession as freshman Matt LeVene buried a 3-point shot from the top of the key to put CUW back up 74-72.
- The Falcons would get a stop on the next possession, forcing Edgewood College to foul with 19 seconds remaining. CUW missed both free throws giving the Eagles another chance to tie or take the lead, but the Falcons defense held strong again and Jake Jurss knocked down two free throws with 3.3 seconds remaining to give CUW the weekend split.
- The Eagles trailed by 10 with 8:14 left in the game, but once again showed their resilience by chipping away at the Concordia Wisconsin lead. The Eagles shot the ball well, especially from 3-point range, making 42.9 percent (9-for-21) from deep.
Jake Negus made 3-of-6 from distance and finished the night with 19 points.
- Schroeckenthaler continues to be an offensive force for the Eagles as he led the team with 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting, while also pulling down a team-best seven rebounds.
- Edgewood College finished the game with 17 assists with Negus,
Avery Lyons, and
Matthew Myers each dishing out four.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The NACC North standings are close after two weeks, as to be expected. With the loss Edgewood College is in a tie for second place with Lakeland University with a 3-1 record. Wisconsin Lutheran sits ahead of them at 2-0, the Warriors playing their first two leagues games this weekend against Marian. CUW owns a 2-2 league record, while MSOE (0-2) and Marian (0-4) are winless in league play.
THE OPPOSITION
- After being held in check on Friday, the Falcons leading scorer, Jordan Johnson, responded in a big way on Saturday. Johnson led all players with 26 points, making 9-of-19 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
- Jurss made the CUW offense run as he scored 15 points to go along with nine assists.
UP NEXT
- The Eagles will be back at it next weekend with two games at MSOE. Both Friday and Saturday's tilts are scheduled for 7 p.m.
