Marian takes two from Softball on opening day

PEORIA, Ill. – The Edgewood College Softball team opened its 2021 season with two non-conference games against Marian University at the MMU Collegiate Slugger Series on Thursday night. The Sabres ended up with a sweep over the Eagles, taking game one, 8-0, and game two, 14-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Marian (2-2) received a strong pitching performance from Paige Rauhut in game one as the Eagles managed just three hits in the contest. Hanna Fisher and Haylee Kasuboski doubled in the opener for Edgewood College (0-2).

- Marian put up crooked numbers in three innings, scoring twice in the second, three times in the fourth, and twice in the fifth before ending the game via the eight-run rule with a solo home run by Payton Loesch, her second home run of the game. Marian hit three home runs in the contest, with Alexa Rodriguez adding a three-run shot in the fourth.

- Game two saw the Eagle bats come alive more with seven hits and four runs scored. Fisher paced the team with a 3-for-4 performance, including a double. Kirsten Dempsey added two hits for Edgewood College.

- Trailing 2-1 entering the third inning, the Eagles fell victim to another big inning as Marian erupted for six runs, capped off by another three-run home run from Rodriguez. Marian would add another six-run frame in the top of the seventh. The Eagles did have a two-run frame in the bottom of the fourth in the nightcap.

UP NEXT
- It will be a quick turnaround for Edgewood College, who is scheduled to play two more games tomorrow. The Eagles will take on tournament host Mount Mary with the first game starting at 8 a.m.
