No. 5 Wartburg closes strong, snaps Eagles win streak at six

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball faced a tough challenge on Friday night with a trip to take on No. 5 Wartburg College. The Eagles battled the Knights in the first half, trailing 34-32 at the break, but Wartburg would pull away in the second half for a 73-53 victory. The Eagles winning streak was snapped at six games, their last setback also against Wartburg on January 3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Knights (10-1) came out strong and took a 20-9 lead after one quarter of play, but Edgewood College (6-3) played its best basketball of the game in the second quarter. The Eagles outscored the Knights, 23-14, in the second quarter and trailed by just two points, 34-32 at the break.

- The big run for Edgewood College came late in the second quarter. Trailing 28-17, the Eagles rattled off 12-straight points to take a 29-28 lead with 1:32 left in the half. Alyssa Lemirande scored seven of the Eagles 12 points during the run. Wartburg would respond with the next six points, but Bria Lemirande made a half court shot at the buzzer to bring the Eagles within two going into the break.

- Bria Lemirande finished the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points and securing 10 rebounds. It was her fifth double-double of the season and fourth-straight game with double-digit rebounds. Alyssa Lemirande and Paige Banks each scored 11 points.

- Wartburg controlled the second half, outscoring the Eagles 39-21 over the final 20 minutes of play.

- The Eagles didn't shoot it well on Friday, specifically from 3-point range where they finished at 28.6 percent (4-for-14). Edgewood College also committed 22 turnovers, while Wartburg turned it over 12 times. The Knights had a little more success from deep as well, making 13-of-36 (36.1 percent).

THE OPPOSITION
- Wartburg received a lot of production from its bench on Friday with 41 points compared to 14 for the Eagles. The three leading scorers for the Knights came off the bench, Jaedon Murphy (15), Sara Faber (14), and Britney Young (10).

UP NEXT
- The Eagles will be at home twice next weekend with a pair of NACC games against Lakeland University. The first of those contests will be Friday, February 19 at 7 p.m.
