RIVER FOREST, Ill. – The Edgewood College Men's Basketball team opened NACC play Wednesday night at Concordia University Chicago with an 82-58 setback.
Jake Schroeckenthaler scored 22 points and
Caden Nelson added a career-best 18 for the Eagles in the league defeat.
COUGARS 82, EAGLES 58
- After a 6-6 start, Concordia Chicago (2-2, 1-0 NACC) made its first run of the game, a 22-4 spurt to make the score 28-10 with just over eight minutes left in the first half. The Eagles (0-5, 0-1 NACC) used a 6-0 stretch to make the score 28-16, but the Cougars closed the half strong and took a 42-25 lead into the break.
- Nelson scored 11 of his career-high 18 points. He drew five fouls in the opening 20 minutes, which resulted in a 5-of-7 showing from the charity stripe. Schroeckenthaler added eight first-half points, including a 3-point make as time expired.
- The Cougars were balanced in the opening half with six players scoring at least five points. Concordia Chicago shot 48.6 percent (18-for-37), while the Eagles countered at 30 percent (9-for-30). The Cougars ended the night at 49.3 percent (34-for-69) and the Eagles ended up making 34.9 percent (22-for-63) from the floor.
- The closest Edgewood College would get the rest of the way was 12 points as the Cougars secured the NACC-opening win. Getting the ball inside to Schroeckenthaler was a point of emphasis in the second half as he scored 14 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Nelson went 3-for-3 from the floor in the second half, adding seven more points to finish with his career-high of 18.
- Three Cougars finished in double figures, led by Jalen Meeks who had 15 points in just over 17 minutes off the bench. Bench scoring has been an issue for the Eagles all season and it was again Wednesday night as the Cougars reserves outscored the Eagles, 43-5. Concordia Chicago also held a 48-32 advantage in the paint and a 19-5 edge in fast-break points.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- The loss snaps a six-game winning streak for the Eagles in the series against Concordia Chicago. Edgewood College still holds a 23-7 lead in the series.
- Schroeckenthaler had his fourth 20-point effort in five games this season. He has scored in double figures in all five games and is averaging 19.6 points per contest to go along with 9.4 rebounds per game.

- The Eagles will host Wisconsin Lutheran College in the second part of a women's/men's doubleheader on Saturday inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome. The men's game is scheduled at 4:15 p.m. which will follow the women's start at 2 p.m.
