Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hartjes' Career Night Not Enough as Eagles Edged by Pointers

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Eli Hartjes and Jake Schroeckenthaler both posted double-doubles and helped lead a second half rally for the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team on Saturday night at UW-Stevens Point, but it was not enough as the host Pointers held on for a 65-63 win.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hartjes had a career night and Schroeckenthaler was great as well as they kept the Eagles (0-2) in the game all night. The duo combined for 48 points and 25 rebounds with Hartjes posting career highs of 25 points and 15 rebounds. He shot 12-for-19 from the floor, while Schroeckenthaler was 10-for-19, finishing the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

- The Eagles trailed the Pointers (1-2) 57-48 with 9:45 left in the game before going on a 10-2 run to cut the Pointers lead to one with 3:48 left. Hartjes scored six points during the run as he finished the second half with 15.

- Garrett Nelson of UWSP buried a 3-point jump shot to push the Pointers lead (62-58) back to four, but Schroeckenthaler went to work with the hoop and the harm with 3:04 left to bring Edgewood College back within a point. Ryan Genrich of UWSP recorded a steal and a layup with just over two minutes to play before Schroeckenthaler once again brought the Eagles within a point with 1:37 left on a jumper.

- The 64-63 lead for the Pointers held for the next minute-plus as Edgewood College had a couple of changes down the stretch to take the lead. Nelson (UWSP) hit one free throw with five seconds left and Hartjes heave at the buzzer fell short, allowing the Pointers to escape with the two-point win.

- Behind the Hartjes/Schroeckenthaler duo, the Eagles did most of their work in the paint on Saturday. Edgewood College scored 48 points in the paint and another seven came from the free throw line. The Eagles shot 47.5 percent (28-for-59) from the floor for the game, but they couldn't connect on any of their 11 3-point attempts.

- On the other end, UWSP relied on the 3-point shot, making 8-of-22 from deep, including a 5-for-9 performance from Brady Wagner. Nelson led the Pointers with 17 points, while Wagner had 15.

OTHER NOTABLES
- The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 37-32, thanks to the 25 combined boards from the starting frontcourt. The duo rarely came off the court with Hartjes logging 37 minutes and Schroeckenthaler playing 35.

- Avery Lyons finished the game with five assists, while Hartjes added four. Caden Nelson scored six points on 2-of-2 shooting and added three assists.

- Dawson Hughes was active on the defensive end with two steals for the Eagles in 12 minutes of action.

THE SERIES
- The Eagles were trying to snap a 14-game skid against the Pointers, who own the season series, 28-3. UWSP has typically been one of the better teams nationally with four national championships since the turn of the century.

UP NEXT
- The Eagles are set for their 2021-22 home opener on Tuesday night against No. 17 UW-Oshkosh. Opening tip from the Todd Wehr Edgedome is set for 7 p.m.
