Knights deal Eagles non-conference setback

WAVERLY, Iowa – The Edgewood College Women's Basketball team fell short in a back-and-forth contest with Wartburg College that saw strong scoring in both the first and fourth periods from both teams. Ultimately, the Eagles fell 60-51 at Wartburg College on Sunday. Paige Banks scored a career-high 12 points in her first start as an Eagle, while Alyssa Lemirande added eight rebounds, eight assists, and two steals in the Eagles second loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edgewood College (0-2) playing for just the second time this season held the lead six different times on Saturday and jumped out to a one-point lead after the first period. With 4:02 on the clock in the first period, a three-pointer from Josie Lemirande cut down the Knights 10-point lead. From there the Eagles went on a 15-4 run to end the period leading 23-22.

- Both teams struggled offensively in the second and third periods. Neither team shooting above 30 percent through the middle of the contest. The Eagles managed to hold the Knights to just five points in the third period and went into the final minutes of action with just a one-point deficit (39-38).

- The Eagles managed their largest lead of the contest (44-41) with five minutes remaining in the fourth period. Despite picking up their offensive performance, the Knights connected on a trio of three-pointers in the final minutes of the contest and escaped with the home win, their first of the season.

- Freshman Paige Banks led the Eagles offense with a career-high 12 points in her first start as an Eagle. The Evansville, Wis. native also added two steals for the Eagles. Diamond Pikulyk added eight points for Edgewood College, while Alyssa Lemirande managed six points and added eight rebounds, eight assists, and three steals.

- Edgewood College saw their best offensive production in the first period, shooting 55 percent (11-of-20) from the field. In the end, the Eagles finished the game with a 37.7 shooting percentage. In addition, the Eagles struggled from three-point range, only connecting on 3-of-19 from deep.

THE OPPOSITION
- The Knights earned their first win of the season behind double-digit scoring from Macy Harris (14), Payton Draper (12), and Britney Young (11). Ally Condrad pulled down a game-high 12 boards.

- Wartburg found most success from the charity stripe, finishing 15-21 from the line.

- The contest marked the first game of the season for the Knights, who finished the 2019-20 season with a fifth consecutive NCAA postseason appearance and were ranked 10th.
