ROCKFORD, Ill. – Matthew Myers scored a career-best 22 points, including making a career-high six 3-point shots, in helping lead the Edgewood College Men's Basketball team to a 99-92 win over Rockford University Saturday. The Eagles have five players finish in double figures in Saturday's win, and the 99 points was a season-best effort for Edgewood College.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Myers may want to think about staying in Illinois and heading to Chicago for the NBA 3-point contest on Saturday night, because the junior was zoned in from deep on Saturday. He made 4-of-5 in the first half from 3-point range, and his first two attempts in the second half. Myers added four free throws to help close the Regents out down the stretch to finish with the 22-point effort.
- As a team, Edgewood College (8-15, 7-11 NACC) shot 51.7 percent (31-for-60) from the floor and 44 percent (11-for-25) from 3-point range. The Eagles also did a great job of getting to the foul line on Saturday, attempting 34 free throws and making 26 of those (76.5 percent).
- The Eagles led by six at halftime and pushed their lead to 13 with 12:18 left after a
Jacob Miller 3-point make. Rockford (11-12, 9-9 NACC) would get as close as four points, but the Eagles knocked down their free throws over the final minute to secure the win.
Jake Negus and Myers combined to go 6-for-6 over the final 29 seconds from the charity stripe.
- Five Eagles finished in double figures, led by Myers career high.
Ben Seefeld made 7-of-12 from the floor to finish with 21 points, while Negus added 17.
Ryan Buss (15) and
Avery Lyons (11) also scored in double figures, while Miller and
Jake Graf chipped in with eight and five points, respectively.
- Buss pulled down eight rebounds, while Miller added six boards. Negus and Miller finished with five and four assists, respectively, as Edgewood College dished out 17 assits on 31 makes Saturday.
- Rockford also shot it well on Saturday, making 50 percent (38-for-76) from the floor. The big different in the game was the Eagles ability to get to the free throw line, as Rockford ended the game just 9-for-15 at the line. Edgewood College made 11 more free throws (26) than Rockford attempted (15).
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Myers six 3-point makes is tied for third most in a game in Edgewood College history. Only Tal Diekvoss (1/27/15) and Cory Whitsell (2/4/99) have made more 3-point shots in a game, both with seven. Myers became the 13th Eagle to make six in a contest,
McClain Steffens being the most recent on February 16 of last season.
THE OPPOSITION
- Rockford had six players finish in double figures on Saturday, led by Kivontay Shaw, who posed a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Nathaniel Shead added 20 points, while Jamar Rivera also recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.
